Steve Rogers is Only 'in the Spirit of' Nomad in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Ever since the end of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, when Steve Rogers tossed his shield back to a beaten Tony Stark, and walked away with his childhood friend Bucky Barnes, fans have wondered what is next for Captain America.

In the trailer for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, we get to see Roger with a beard, without his shield, and wearing a version of his Captain America suit but with the star emblem darkened out. Speculation rose that Rogers was in fact Nomad, who is a mantle he took up in the comics when he was no longer Captain America. Heck, actor Chris Evans has even signed a few pieces of merchandise with the name Nomad, too.

The autograph really fueled the fires of speculation, but Infinity War director Joe Russo has set the record straight. While speaking with ESPN's Fantasy Focus Fooball podcast, Russo confirmed Rogers is just "...in the spirit of Nomad." Here's his full quote:

"Our approach to [Steve Rogers] was to deconstruct him, to take him in a different direction. Obviously you can’t deal with a character called Captain America without dealing with the thematics behind that, so we wanted a relevancy to it and we wanted to put him in a position where he was questioning the chain of command. You’ll see in these Avengers films, he’s on a very specific journey as a character. Some people have suspected that he may be Nomad heading into Avengers 3 and I wouldn’t say that he is exactly Nomad, but he is the spirit of that character."

So there you go... in Infinity War, Rogers is not Nomad, just playing a role loosely based off the comic book character.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR releases in the U.S. on May 4.
