Warner Bros. is Looking For a New Point Person to Oversee DC Films and the DCEU

It was bound to happen as JUSTICE LEAGUE will fail to get anywhere close to that ever-elusive $1 billion worldwide ticket sales mark for Warner Bros. ... changes are coming to its studio structure.

According to Variety, Time Warner executives are very upset with Warner Bros. for the way they have mis-managed their DC Extended Universe now that JUSTICE LEAGUE will obviously underperform at the worldwide box office. Sure, it has currently made $573 million but this is on a reported production budget of $300 million-plus (and that's not including all the marketing costs). JUSTICE LEAGUE is not going to be profitable as Time Warner had hoped, although it may not lose a ton of money, too.

But this was supposed to be the movie that broke Time Warner and Warner Bros. through into the $1 billion barrier — the same thing was said for BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE which did not accomplish that goal either.

The problems are too many chefs in the kitchen (read this post on Forbes about that) as well as continuing to push toward to set release date instead of doing what is best for a film and delaying it to release an even better product. Because of all of this, and more, Warner Bros. (probably mandated by Time Warner execs) is considering bringing their DC Film studio onto the Warner Bros. studio lot to better oversee productions of DCEU movies. Also, the studio is looking for a new point person to oversee the DCEU as Jon Berg is leaving and DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns' role seems to be evolving to just an advisory role instead of being as hands-on in development and screenwriting as he has been recently.

"Warners is expected to name a new person to run point on DC’s films. Geoff Johns, who has partnered with Berg on much of the creative direction of the movies, is expected to continue serving as DC Entertainment’s chief creative officer. Johns, who reports to DC president Diane Nelson, works in areas such as television (and has written various episodes for DC-inspired shows), publishing, and consumer products, in addition to his contributions to the films. Going forward, his work on the films may evolve, and could be more advisory in nature.
"These people also say that Emmerich is weighing the idea of further integrating DC’s film operations into the studio’s main movie arm. That would entail putting the divisions under the same roof rather than having DC remain in a separate building on the lot, sources say. Marvel, which is owned by Disney, does operate its comic book film division autonomously, but other studios, such as Fox and Sony, produce their superhero films under the studio’s banner.
"The DC overhaul is expected to happen by January."

If you're wondering how this may affect DC's current lineup of future movies, do not worry. AQUAMAN is in post-production and will release in December 2018, SHAZAM! begins filming in early 2018, FLASHPOINT (the Flash solo movie working title which will reportedly co-star Ben Affleck's Batman for his final turn in the cowl) is in development, a BATMAN solo movie (not starring Affleck) is in development, MAN OF STEEL 2 is said to be in early development, as well as several film projects featuring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn are development, and several other DC projects in the works too. In other words, the DCEU is still moving forward regardless of past missteps and your beloved superheroes will continue to be on the big screen in the coming years even though the studio hierarchy is going through changes.
