AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 5 Episode 4 Review: A Life Earned

This was a slower week for AGENTS OF SHIELD. We got a few answers here and there, but for the most part we meandered around while everyone got used to living on a space station. I’m not sure exactly how long the crew has been there, but it already seems like they’ve gotten the hang of things. That doesn’t mean they’re becoming complacent.

In fact, the call that Coulson recorded has given them renewed faith that there’s a greater mystery going on. This is apparently tied to some kind of prophecy, that it SHIELD was always meant to arrive at this time and place. Not sure how I feel about that, but there’s a strong possibility we’ll get the answer to that next week. Either way, it appears that Cassius killed everyone associated with the prophecy, so no one really knows what’s going on.

Turns out though, that the guy on the HAM radio was Deke’s father, a man who should be dead. This presents more questions than it answers, really. Is this Deke’s father from the past? Is it Deke’s father from the “present”, but alive on the surface somehow? Why is SHIELD called the Delegation? Again, it’s entirely possible that we get answers to some of these questions next week.

I’m also glad that Deke kind of got his this week. It didn’t take either Coulson or May very long to figure out that Deke had sold them out. I enjoyed watching them take turns punching him. It was even funnier that Mac soldered his door shut. Hopefully this means that he’ll be out of the way for a little bit.

On the other end of things, we had Cassius interrogating both Daisy and Simmons. It was a neat parlor trick to learn that the Inhuman could allow others to read his mind. It’s a unique take on an otherwise un-noteworthy power. But in the end the two were able to fool Cassius into thinking that they were the only two that made it through the portal.

Unfortunately for them, that cover only lasted so long. After a really cool fight against the Kree lady (she’s important but her name is almost never said so I cannot remember it), May winds up captured as well. This is clearly going to put a cramp in everyone’s plans as Cassius continues to collect the SHIELD agents. By now half the team is in his hands.

The only part of the story that really didn’t work was Mac’s storyline. I honestly don’t care about his PTSD from the Framework. This arc that they’ve taken him on, where he’s suddenly afraid of violence, is frustrating. It’s sad to see a character like him squander all his screen time by being a nuisance to everyone else and then whining about it later.

Lastly, there was that reveal at the end that Fitz has finally made it through. Judging by the coming attractions for next week, we’ll be learning what happened to him when he was left behind and how he managed to get to the future. It’s possible that during this time we learn more about the prophecy. Was it something that Fitz inspired? Did he create the tech to let the HAM radio talk to the past? My only hope is that the episode is one giant flashback, and that we move the main story forward some by the end.
