JUSTICE LEAGUE Profile: Get to Know the Villain Steppenwolf

Steppenwolf first appeared in New Gods No. 7 in February 1972. Steppenwolf is part of the species New Gods and was introduced into the DC Universe with the help of Jack Kirby. Steppenwolf is German for “wolf of the steppe.”

Steppenwolf and the New Gods live on the planet Apokolips, which is a fourth world that exists beyond space and time. In this world is another planet, New Genesis, which is inhabited by good New Gods and is ruled by Highfather.

When Steppenwolf was first introduced, he was working with his nephew, Darkseid, to plot revenge on Darkseid’s rival, the Highfather. Steppenwolf murdered Highfather’s wife and sparked a war between New Genesis and Apokolips. During the war between the two planets, Highfather was able to track down and kill Steppenwolf. Luckily for Steppenwolf, no one stays dead in the comic book world and he was revived in 1984.

Steppenwolf is the commander of the military forces on Apokolips. He is best known for commanding the units of a huge dog cavalry. While leading his military forces, he is known for carnage and mass deaths. Steppenwolf was so successful due to his superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and immortality. Steppenwolf’s signature weapon is the electro-axe. He is a swordsman and has great hand-to-hand combat skills., making him a powerful enemy.

In the DC Universe, Steppenwolf has fought several characters, including Green Lantern, the Flash, Black Canary, Doomsday, and more.

Steppenwolf will make his official live-action debut into the DC Extended Universe on November 17 in JUSTICE LEAGUE. Steppenwolf will be played by CiarĂ¡n Hinds and will be the main villain in the ensemble movie. Steppenwolf actually first appeared in BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, but he was only seen in the deleted scene entitled “Communion.”

In JUSTICE LEAGUE, Steppenwolf will come to Earth with his army of parademons. His ultimate goal will be to collect Mother Box’s that were hidden on Earth thousands of years ago. In an interview with Independent, Hinds says Steppenwolf is “old, tired, still trying to get out of his own enslavement to Darkseid, [but] he has to keep on this line to try to take over worlds.”
