SUPERGIRL Season 3 Episode 3 Review: Far From the Tree

Kara is slowly getting back to her own bubbly sled as she tries being the supportive sister when their mother tries to throw Alex and Maggie a bridal shower. This is quickly put into pause when Hank shows up instead. He reveals he's going to Mars after receiving a message from Megan, which of course means Kara is going to. Their ride is a ship disguised as a old 1950’s blue car. Very Grease Lightning.

Eliza takes over the bridal shower for Alex and Maggie and has dinner with them. It's there Maggie tells them she hadn't seen her parents since she was 14 and was left at her aunt's after her father said he shamed her. If that doesn't just punch you in the cut nothing will.

Meanwhile, Hank and Kara find their way to Mars and immediately find Megan along with other White Martian revels. They stormed a camp and found one last Green Martian left. Not only is there another of Hank’s kind but it is none other than his father, Myr’nn.

They believe his father, religious leaders for the Green Martians, knows where to find a Staff. The Staff of Kolar which would give the White Martian psychic ability to find the resistance fighters and wipe them out. Hank goes to see Myr’nn but his father is convinced it is a trick by the White Martians who have been torturing him. This upsets Hank and feels he disappointed his father by leaving the planet but Kara encourages him to try again.

Hank speaks with his father about their planet’s history and is close to connecting with him but it's cut short when Megan’s second in command wants to try and take his memories by force (which could kill him). Kara gets them out of there before he can.

Hank brings them back to their home. Myr’nn, however, still doesn't believe them and is instead believe they are using this to break him and succeeding. Kara speaks to Hank’s father and convinces him to speak with his son. And that she understands how painful it would be if he opened his mind and it turned out it wasn't his son. Just like she would if she had a chance to get her parents back.

Alex tries to encourage Maggie to reach out to her parents about coming to their shower but she rejects it. But she eventually comes around and leave a voicemail for him. Only Maggie’s father comes but he seems to try and make an effort. He even tells her that he follows all of her cases.

With encouragement from Kara, Hank gets him to let his father show a memory of their home when his granddaughters were alive and he surprised his son for his birthday. This convinces Myr’nn. just in time as Megan and then others show up ready to work together. They got over their issues oddly quick but okay.

Kara distracts the White Martians as the others fight them. As they're using the Staff to disable the other resistance fighters, Hank and Supergirl manager to take them out. The resistance decides unanimously they should take the Staff back to earth and hide it. Hank and Kara take his father back home with them.

Maggie’s father comes to the shower. His awkwardness is fairly obvious but he does stick a baby picture of her for their bridal board. Everything is going smoothly until he witnesses them kiss and leaves in a rage. She follows him and has it out. Her father is vocal about his anger because he feels she is being disrespectful for all he had to go through as a Mexican-American to get respect. Maggie watches her father walk away from her again.

Maggie meets up with her father one last time to give him back her baby picture. She leaves more comfortable in her skin and sexuality and with the family that she chose.

Alex is happy that she feels better after her confrontation but admits she hoped it would change her mind about having kids, which Maggie makes clear doesn't. Unfortunately, it feels this is going to be part of their break up. Kids are a deal breaker and neither of them are budging.

It seemed strange that Maggie suddenly became Latina considering none of her background was discussed prior to this episode and the actress is actually Italian. I feel it was kind of a random last minute thing to add in there. It was a nice change to see Kara able to be there for Hank with as many times as he is there for her and Alex. And I'm sure it won't be the last one that Myr’nn is mentioned or shown in the show as he adapts to Earth life. Kara seems settling back into her life and opening up more to her family. Mon-El has been confirmed to come back so it'll be interesting to see if that throws a wrench into her life or if she continues to realize the importance of not only Supergirl but Kara as well
