Report: Marvel Canceled FANTASTIC FOUR Comics Due to Anger at Fox Over Movie Rights

This has been a lingering story since it first broke online in 2014, by BleedingCool. The reported reason for the Fantastic Four (FF) comics being canceled for several years now has been due to anger issues Marvel has had with 20th Century Fox over the movie rights to all-things FF.

Just about a year prior to that news it was also reported how Marvel and Fox were talking about an extended movie rights deal for Daredevil; seeing as how Fox was close in development to cracking its story and script. In exchange, Fox would have given back the FANTASTIC FOUR movie rights to Marvel. This deal was meant to give Fox more time in developing a Daredevil movie, but this fell through and instead of handing the rights of Fantastic Four back to Marvel, Fox let the Daredevil rights expire which then reverted back to Marvel. This is how Marvel TV was able to bring their DAREDEVIL series to Netflix.

In my opinion, the writing must have been on the wall for 2015's FANTASTIC FOUR reboot, since Marvel saw how bad production was going in 2014, so the logical explanation for the cancelation of the comic book series could have been due to (a.) that Daredevil deal fallout with Fox and Marvel was really mad over it and (b.) the 2015 movie reboot had the makings of a flop.

Which brings us to today. Now, writer Jonathan Hickman has added fuel to the fire by confirming to Newsarama the canceled FF comics was in fact due to anger at Fox because of the FF movie rights.

"I think it’s pretty common knowledge at this point that Marvel isn’t publishing Fantastic Four because of their disagreement with Fox. While it bums me out, I completely understand because, well, it isn’t like they’re not acting out of cause. Fox needs to do a better job there."

Hickman went on to seemingly place blame on Marvel, too, since they claimed it was canceled due to bad sales, yet being it seems to have been out of spite.

"That kind of thinking runs contrary to everything I believe in as a professional storyteller. It comes from a place of manipulation where an attempt is made to make the reader desire something through denial. It's hacky. It's suboptimal. It's the central tenet of all sh---y dating advice. If you want someone to care about a book, write a story they care about."

This all boils down to an executive level pissing contest and that means I would have to put blame on Perlmutter more than anyone else. There are reports of him being a pain to work with because it's his way or the highway — as Marvel Studios fans have already known (since August 2015) when studio head Kevin Feige had alleged issues with the Marvel CEO's way of doing business so much that Disney CEO Bob Iger transferred oversight of Feige and his Marvel Studios team from Perlmutter to Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn.

Marvel Entertainment is separated into divisions that include: Marvel Comics, Marvel TV, Marvel Animation, Marvel Games and Marvel Studios. The studio is the only division not under the Marvel CEO, and until he's gone there will constantly be petty squabbles like this until a new CEO is in place who can work well with others to do what's best for the fans most of all.
