SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Nearly Brings in as Much on Thursday Night as Both AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Films Combined
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is off to a great start in having a huge domestic opening weekend!
The third reboot of the franchise since 2002 has brought in an estimated $15.4 million from its Thursday night screenings. This is almost as much as both of the last two AMAZING SPIDER-MAN movies did on their Thursday night screenings combined, at $16.2M (7.5M and 8.7M, respectively).
Most recent Marvel Studios release GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 still had a bigger Thursday total at $17 million, but Spidey is a household name and positive word-of-mouth from Thursday night viewings, as well as fantastic critic reviews, are fueling the Wall Crawler's success. This should carry throughout its opening weekend with even bigger numbers as positive words travels throughout social media, around the water cooler at work and everywhere else online.
Initial domestic weekend opening projections were topping out as high as $110 million, but the hype and buzz around this movie should propel that prediction much higher. It will be fun to watch the numbers come in throughout the weekend to see where things end up at on Sunday afternoon.
