Analysis: It Still Sounds Like Sony Has No Clue What They Are Doing With Their VENOM Movie

Without Spider-Man there is no Venom. When Peter Parker puts on the black symbiote suit the Venom alien takes on Spider-Man's power set, appearance and becomes an evil-mirrored version of the hero. This is from comic cook canon and while a live action film adaptation can and will change Venom's origin tale, having influence from Spidey is the very essence of Venom's existence and character.

This is why it is so confusing that Sony, who owns the live action movie rights for all-things Spider-Man — is making a VENOM movie without the influence of Spider-Man, who is now a part of Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Since the announcement that VENOM is in development, with actor Tom Hardy set to star as the title character, Sony producer Amy Pascal seems to have no idea what the studio is really doing with the character.

For starters, VENOM is a movie that will not be produced by Marvel Studios as it will be solely developed, written and produced by Sony. With that knowledge, let's breakdown how Pascal and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have gone back-and-forth with contradicting statements exposing Pascal's lack of knowing what is going on with VENOM.

June 13 -- Feige told AlloCiné VENOM will not be a part of the MCU.

June 18 -- Pascal, with Feige sitting next to her, says VENOM (as well as Sony's SILVER AND BLACK Spidey spin-off movie) will be "adjunct" and in the same universe as SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING giving Feige a very confusing look while she is saying it.

June 25 -- Pascal backtracks on her last comment to say VENOM and SILVER AND BLACK will not be a part of the MCU.

June 28 -- Feige tells Variety VENOM will not be a part of the MCU, again.

June 28 -- Pascal backtracks on her backtrack and tells Fandom that VENOM and SILVER AND BLACK are in the "same reality" as Spider-Man and could crossover, eventually.

The point of all of this is to show how Pascal has no clue with VENOM right now. However, at one point in the last few days Feige did state "never say never" when it comes to any potential crossover for Spidey and Venom. His comment could imply nobody really knows what is happening yet and maybe a new studio partnership deal between Sony and Marvel Studios is being brokered behidn closed doors right now to bring Venom into the MCU. For as popular as Spider-Man is, Venom is equally as popular as one of his greatest villains so this situation should be dealt with care since Venom has such strong ties to Spider-Man.

Our best guess in this particular situation and line of comments, while contradictory and confusing, could show that things are fluid when it comes to what Sony and Marvel Studios need to do with a VENOM movie and any possible Spider-Man influence.

Stay tuned because hopefully plans with VENOM behind-the-scenes are indeed more fluid than originally expected — again just our best guess with this situation right now — since fans have gone to social media to show their unhappiness toward Venom and Spider-Man not being a part of the MCU. And maybe Marvel Studios is stepping in to help Sony bring VENOM onto the big screen and into the MCU the right way; as they've now done with SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING. VENOM is in pre-production and set to begin filming by the end of this summer or early fall. It releases in the U.S. on October 5, 2018.
