GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Aims For a $160 Million U.S. Opening Weekend

With GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 set to open in U.S. theaters tomorrow night, it is that time to project what its opening weekend box office numbers could be.

According to Deadline, the sequel is projecting between a $140 million - $160 million opening weekend. This range puts GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 firmly into fifth place for Marvel Studios' biggest domestic opening weekends ever after THE AVENGERS, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and IRON MAN 3. Each of these Marvel Studios films have earned over $1 billion at worldwide box office, so GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is in great company and is projecting to possibly become the studios' fifth movie to gross over $1 billion.

In fact, the highest non-$1 billion grossing worldwide movie by Marvel Studios is 2014's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. In other words, these a-holes have the serious look of a $1 billion movie franchise after being virtually Marvel Comic nobodies in the eyes of the mainstream movie audience just three years ago. Now it seems like fans can't get enough of Baby Groot and the other Guardians. (And we can tell you first hand it is a brilliant use of Baby Groot; not too much of him and not too little.)

At the start of the year, we here at DailySuperHero.com predicted GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 would be 2017's No. 1 worldwide grossing superhero movie bringing in an estimated $1.3 billion. Things are trending up for our prediction as the movie has already grossed over $130 million overseas leading into the summer's big opening weekend.
