GUARDIANS OF THE GALAY VOL. 3 Will Help Marvel Studios Pivot to a Multi-Film Cosmic Universe Story Arc

Marvel Studios has always been known to work in Phases. Phase 1 was capped by THE AVENGERS. Then, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON concluded Phase 2. And soon, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS 4 will give closure to Phase 3 and what should be considered Marvel's Cinematic Trilogy. It is long form storytelling at its finest and a format that every studio is trying to copy.

So what happens next?

A pivot.

Marvel Studios' pivot looks to be to continue building its cinematic universe but with a much greater focus on its cosmic universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has set the tone for cosmic storytelling expansion, with THOR: RAGNAROK already having its cosmic influence felt on November 3. In fact, this is exactly what studio head Kevin Feige is now saying to Fandango.

“I think things are going to look very different at that point [after Avengers 4], but I think the early discussions we’ve had with James [Gunn] about Vol. 3 and beyond with what we’ll call the 'Cosmic Universe' and the Guardian characters is very exciting. Which is why he signed up and we announced that even before Guardians Vol. 2 came out.”

Writer and director James Gunn is already signed on for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 and he's also on record saying how the third movie will help to set up the next 10 movies by the studio. That much information really makes it seems obvious that after AVENGERS 4 there will be Gunn's influence throughout all Marvel Studios films for the next long form (cosmic) story arc.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 releases in the U.S. on May 5.
