AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 4 Episode 19 Review: All the Madame's Men

So much is happening right now but at the same time nothing is actually happening. That’s been my biggest issue with this storyline of SHIELD. It’s been fun to see the mirror universe versions of the characters, but the true test of the storyline will be the after effects. How much will those under Aida’s control remember when they get out? Obviously Daisy and Simmons will remember, but will Coulson because he’s kind of special in the memory department?

It’s a question I’m certain we won’t get the answer to until next season. We only have one episode left and based on the events of the episode, most of the finale will be taken up with a race against time to defeat Aida and get everyone back to the real world. In fact I imagine that the cliffhanger will be that the Fitz from the Framework came back into the real world instead of Aida or something like that.

Now then, on to the actual episode. Everyone was dealing with the fact that the Patriot was dead and the fact that Daisy was missing. May’s turn against Hydra still feels a little quick and too easy, especially since she was more than willing to hold a kid hostage the episode before. But we’ve only got two episodes left so things are going to move quickly I suppose.

There wasn’t a whole lot of substance in this episode because all the pieces have to move into place. Simmons and Trip went to an oil rig while Coulson and Mack went searching for Daisy. The only interesting stuff to come out of that was that we got to see more of Trip, who I wish could somehow come back to the real world with us.

The only interesting plot line until the third act was Fitz’s. Aida says that no one can escape their true nature and that Fitz’s is that of a romantic. To me this means he’s willing to do whatever it takes for the ones he loves. After all he went across the universe and back again in order to save Simmons in season three. It makes sense that he would attempt to create a dimension crossing machine in order to save Aida.

Because of this, I wonder how difficult it will be to convince Fitz to leave with them. He’s yet to come face to face with Simmons though, and she might be the key to saving him and bringing the whole thing down.

At the very least, the last act of the episode brought our two separate SHIELD story lines together as the group took control of the main media outlet in order to broadcast the truth. It seemed like for a moment that Ward would be sacrificing himself, cementing himself as the true opposite of the spiteful Ward everyone knew in the real world. But it seems like he’ll live another day.

A few notes: Seeing Bakhshi again was pretty fun. He’s really slimy and I love that. It was nice seeing a little tribute to John Garrett, Hydra hero. I kind of wish we heard a little bit about what was going on with Bobbi and Hunter. It’s kind of sad that the show pretty much pretends like they never existed.
