Questions About Sony's VENOM Movie Which Will Reportedly be Rated R, Horror-Like and Not in the MCU

Sorry Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans but is seems like you won't get a chance to see Tom Holland's Spider-Man do battle with Venom in the Disney-owned Marvel Studios universe. (It's okay to scream 'WTF?!!' out loud, by the way.)

This is because Sony Pictures is building their own Marvel movie universe apart from the one Holland's Spidey will exist in within the MCU. And it all starts with the launch of VENOM in fall 2018.

According to Collider, VENOM will take reference from horror movies (this is sounding good) as well as follow the lead of Fox's recent rated R movies like DEADPOOL and LOGAN (this is sounding good, too). Although, it will not have anything to do with the MCU and Holland's Spider-Man. (Again, it's okay to scream 'WTF?!?' out loud a second time.)

This brings many questions surrounding this potentially ambitious standalone movie.

  • How can Venom really be Venom if the alien symbiote is never worn first by Spider-Man? This is how Venom gets his iconic look since it adapts Spidey's powers.
  • Does this mean no black suit Spider-Man in the MCU? This would be very sad.
  • Will this be more Agent Venom than Venom? In the comics, Flash Thompson is Agent Venom who is an anti-hero hero. However, Flash is in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING and since VENOM is not a part of the MCU it would have to be a different character as Agent Venom.
  • Will this even work without Spider-Man? This is the biggest question right now and if Spidey is not involved this could be a new version of Venom never seen before on film or in the comics.
  • What about Carnage? Maybe VENOM is about the symbiote spawning Carnage, who would then be the antagonist to Venom's protagonist. There was a rumored VENOM / CARNAGE movie planned by Sony at one point in 2014 — click here to read that old post — and perhaps some influence from the old script has made its way into this new movie.

So many questions without answers right now and this all just seems like a movie that is destined to lots of questions until Sony provides some official answers.

VENOM is currently in development and will begin filming later this year for its October 5, 2018 release.
