The long, ongoing saga of Marvel Studios and a hopeful BLACK WIDOW solo movie is one that will continue to make headlines until it finally happens. Scarlett Johansson wants it, studio head Kevin Feige wants it and lots of fans want it, too.
“I’ve talked to Kevin Feige about it. We’re creatively really compatible. I think we both agree that the character is right for a standalone, it’s just a case of timing at this point for both Marvel and myself," Johansson told TotalFilm, via GamesRadar.
So what's the problem here?
For starters, Marvel Studios has their production timeline set through 2019 and are focused on making those movies right now. Although the studio has set aside three release dates for unknown Phase 4 movies in 2020. Maybe there's a chance one of those could be a BLACK WIDOW movie... maybe.
It's been since October 2016 when we last heard Johansson address the topic of a solo movie and it's great to hear she's still interested in it. In fact, back in May 2016, fans were polled on which Marvel Cinematic Universe character they wanted to see star in a solo movie. Black Widow was the top choice as she beat out Vision, who took second place, by a score of 48-percent to 15-percent.
Right now, it is really an issue of timing even though there's been plenty of time since she was introduced in IRON MAN 2, in 2010, for her own movie to be green lit. But don't forget that that was back in a time when the studio was still under the supervision of Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter, who had allegedly resisted the idea of a female-led solo movie and had reportedly been the person who didn't want to make female action figures because he supposedly said they don't sell well.
In August 2015, Marvel Studios moved away from Perlmutter and under the direct supervision of Disney Studios head Alan Horn. This is quite possibly the biggest reason why fans may finally see a BLACK WIDOW solo movie because Horn, unlike Perlmutter, is not holding Feige and his creative team back at all.
