SUPERGIRL Season 2 Episode 13 Review: Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk

After being so rudely interrupting a budding relationship and kiss between Mon -El and Kara, we find the trickster, Mr. Mxyzptlk coming on very strong to get Kara to marry him. Even going as far as to send Mon-El away to the DEO in his underwear before promising to make Kara fall in love with him. From zero suitors to two. That didn't take long.

The appearance of Kara’s new suitor does not wane Mon-El’s intentions. They both arrive at the DEO after Mxyzptlk refuses to take no for an answer. Hank shines some light on this guy. He is a fifth dimensional being who is able to warp reality, which appears to be magic, kinda like a genie.

Kara is not the only one having a rotten holiday. Maggie has an inherent hatred of the day, in contrast to Alex. Winn isn't having the best day either. He nearly gets killed by two alien jerks and is saved by Lyra. A alien from Starhaven. His luck changes when he impresses her with knowledge of her planet and accepts her dinner date.

Mr. Mxyzptlk becomes dangerous as he tries to woo Kara by bringing down some robbers and nearly shooting them in the process. In addition to that, we see a revival of Parasite who is supposed to be dead courtesy of Mxyzptlk. Mon-El and Kara are unsuccessful and Mr. Mxyzptlk rescues them dressed as Superman. He promises he won't stop until they get married. Since he is threatening her home, I think taking him out is now a viable option.

Mon-El and Kara have their first fight as an (almost) couple in reaction to him being jealous of Mxyzptlk and insinuate the end of their relationship. Mon-El also becomes annoyed and takes an unknown alien weapon to duel Mxyzptlk. He's more than happy to duel to the death for Kara but not without putting them in theater costume. Yes. He chooses Hamilton and Burr. Lucky for Mon-El the alien weapon works and cuts Mxyzptlk off from his powers and they duel the Earth way, with a good old fashioned fist fight. Mxyzptlk gets them upper hand and is about to kill Mon-El when Kara shows up and promises to marry him at the Fortress of Solitude.

Despite Mon-El’s protests and promises to be better, Kara comes to the Fortress of Solitude and tells Mxyzptlk she won't marry him. Mxyzptlk uses the frozen statue of Jor-El to attack Kara out of anger. She has no choice but to crumble the statue. Kara decides to “get nuts” (yes, a Michael Keaton Batman reference) and threatens to explode the Fortress of Solitude with them in it. She makes him type out the cancellation code which she sets as his name backwards. The key to sending him off world. Like she was ever going to marry that tool.

Initially Valentine’s Day is horrible for Maggie and Alex. Especially when Alex learns that Maggie's parents kicked her out at 14 when learning she was gay. Alex and Maggie make up after Maggie plans a perfect prom for them. Winn’s relationship is looking up too. Lyra is surprised that Winn wants more than to have an experience with an alien and actually wants relationship. It'll be interesting to see the relationship between Winn and Lyra’s inter-species relationship evolves. It will not doubt have an effect on not only them but the anti-alien groups as well.

After Kara takes care of business with Mr. Mxyzptlk, she sees Mon-El who practically grovels for her forgiveness before she reveals she didn't mean anything she said about not wanting to be with him. They finally have their well-deserved kiss.

Maggie and Alex are slowly facing real problems in their relationship. This episode gave us a real look at Maggie as she revealed she was kicked out when her parents found out she was gay. Sadly this isn't an uncommon feat for most gay teens, but it did shed some light on her and gave us a realistic version of what could happen when someone comes out. I hope they continue to bring Maggie more into the fold at the DEO.

I'm all for Mon-El and Kara getting together. I think they'd make an interesting couple especially since they are not super similar. Mon-El has flaws and makes Kara realize she has some too. I do hope they don't keep revisiting the fact of his ego gets in the way. Mon-El seems to be growing up and they shouldn't keep backpedaling. Eventually they'll have to realize their differences and makes it work.

All in all the episode was campy fun riddled with pop culture references and a love centric plot. I did enjoy Mxyzptlk and wouldn't mind him showing up again. It was a nice break from the current plot. It looks like we’ll be back to Cadmus stirring up trouble but also returning with Jeremiah.
