Wrap Party: DailySuperHero.com Staff Ranks Their Top 2016 Super Hero Movies

With 2016 rapidly coming to a close it is time to look back at the past year. Welcome to the DailySuperHero.com wrap party!

A few of our staff took some time to rank 2016's super hero movie releases and here's their lists:

CARLY B., SUPERGIRL BEAT WRITER

  1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
  2. DOCTOR STRANGE
  3. SUICIDE SQUAD
  4. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
  5. DEADPOOL
  6. BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

Civil War could've so easily been seen as another Avengers movie with all the Marvel characters but it did the comic book justice. There was an ensemble of characters that got just enough screen time, great setup for new characters to be introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Spider-Man and Black Panther) and an ending that leaves you waiting for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.

TIM MILLER, DC FILMS CORRESPONDENT

  1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
  2. DEADPOOL
  3. DOCTOR STRANGE
  4. SUICIDE SQUAD
  5. BATMAN V. SUPERMAN
  6. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

Civil War could have very easily become an overstuffed mess. It had to balance two feuding teams of Avengers, set up for future Avengers movies and introduce a brand new Spider-Man all while remaining a “Captain America” movie at its heart. It succeeded on all fronts and provided fans with a few of the greatest super hero scenes of all time. Once again, Marvel Studios shows it still is the King.

SHANNON BREWER, LEGENDS OF TOMORROW BEAT WRITER

  1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
  2. DEADPOOL
  3. DOCTOR STRANGE
  4. SUICIDE SQUAD
  5. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
  6. BATMAN V. SUPERMAN

I had a really tough time deciding between DEADPOOL and Civil War for No. 1. DEADPOOL managed to do everything a super hero movie needs to do. It was funny, included loads of action and really stayed true to the character's source material. But at the end of the day Civil War prevails, in my opinion. The Civil War storyline in the comics has always been one of my favorites and while the movie had about 12 heroes at their disposal instead of every Marvel character, they managed to alter the story into something that still held true to the emotional struggle each of the characters went through. Not to mention the Russo brothers have extraordinary storytelling capabilities as filmmakers, do a great job of bringing comic panels to life and the stunt coordinators they hire are insane! Plus the return of Spider-man to the MCU might have been the most perfect super hero moment all year.

JAMES PHILBRICK, PROFILE WRITER

  1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
  2. DEADPOOL
  3. DOCTOR STRANGE
  4. BATMAN V. SUPERMAN
  5. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
  6. SUICIDE SQUAD

With so many characters and new routes to explore, the third Captain America movie could have easily gone off the rails. Instead, the Russo brothers provided us with a focused and intense movie that was extremely fun and satisfying to watch.

NICK WHITNEY, ARROW BEAT WRITER & MCU CORRESPONDENT

  1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
  2. DOCTOR STRANGE
  3. DEADPOOL
  4. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
  5. SUICIDE SQUAD
  6. BATMAN V. SUPERMAN

How could my top comic book movie of 2016 be anything other than Civil War? It's the perfect storm of all these characters, all this history, built up over eight years and colliding on-screen. And a new Spider-Man! DOCTOR STRANGE just nips DEADPOOL, in my opinion, due to some of the jokes in DEADPOOL not landing with me, but DEADPOOL was a stand-out brilliant film and Fox should be applauded for making good on the character. I struggled somewhat with the bottom three because I disliked them so much I didn't want to think about them anymore. But I have to say as disappointed as I was with Apocalypse, the DCEU films that came out this year not only left me cold, but they nearly killed my love of super heroes. SUICIDE SQUAD was a mess and BATMAN V. SUPERMAN? After watching the mildly better (but still bad) BvS Ultimate Edition, I never want to watch it again.

DANIEL WOLF, FOUNDER & PUBLISHER

  1. DEADPOOL
  2. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
  3. DOCTOR STRANGE
  4. BATMAN V. SUPERMAN
  5. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
  6. SUICIDE SQUAD

It's very hard for me to not have Civil War in the top spot in 2016, but DEADPOOL was the movie that gave me the biggest smiles throughout by taking edgy risks to bring the genre to new creative heights. I'm very hopeful for LOGAN and its R-rating now. On the flip side, Fox needs to figure out their X-Men franchise because new filmmakers and writers need to be brought in to breathe some fresh life into it just like how new creatives were brought in to revitalize the franchise with X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. Both Apocalypse and SUICIDE SQUAD were my biggest letdowns of 2016. The misuse of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse, or technically the lack of using them properly, and the muddled plot and terrible antagonist of SUICIDE SQUAD has me saying that I have zero interest to watch either of those two movies ever again.
