Season 2 Episode 1 Review: The Adventures of SUPERGIRL

After the Season 1 finale of SUPERGIRL, there were so many questions left to answer. The most important one was who was in the pod. Luckily, there are no time jumps so we pick up right where we left off. When Kara and Hank opens up the Kryptonian pod she discovers man. Immediately, the DEO spring into action and brings him to their facility. The one that isn't underground and dark and where poor Supergirl gets bitten by bats.

With the man in the pod being unconscious, they have no concrete proof of him being an actual Kryptonian. So Winn is on the case to analyze the pod. In the meantime, Kara meets up with Cat Grant to discuss her future at the company. After being effectively shut down on her choice of moving up into a new position, she is given an assignment to look inward to see what she has a need to do.

Kara and James finally are about to have their first date when, of course, disaster strikes. The Venture, a commercial spacecraft that is taking its first flight, has an engine explode. Supergirl, who is watching, meets up with the one and only Superman. Together, the cousins land the Venture.

Excited to finally go saving people with her cousin, Kara brings him to the DEO. His presence brings a sense of respect to all the employees of the DEO and tension between him and Hank. Turns out when Hank decides to bring Kryptonian back to the base instead of destroying it, Superman decides he didn't want to be apart of their super secret missions. Hmm. No love loss there.

In an effort to see how the Venture was sabotaged during the flight, Clark joins Kara at Catco to find some more information. They get information that the one person who didn't show up on the plane was Lena Luthor. Lex’s sister. Yes, his better and hopefully less evil sibling is now in National City for a fresh start. After a thorough interrogation of her by Clark and Kara, they continue to find another lead.

Winn brings them information that the explosion was meant for Lena Luthor. Lena is being targeted by an assassin named Corben. This order came right from the head jerk in charge. You guessed it, Lex Luthor. Corben launches another attack against Lena when she tries to take off in a helicopter but is trapped by Corben’s drones. She is saved by Supergirl and Superman but refuses to go into hiding. She proceeds to go to her renaming ceremony. Corben strikes again and takes down a building to distract the super cousins, but he is taken down by Lena herself, along with some help from Alex. Winn’s help lands him a full time job with the DEO. What better way to spend you work day then surrounded by aliens?

After struggling for days on what job she wants at Catco, she settles on being a reporter. Something that Cat had her matched for since she submitted her interview. Cat seems to be the one in a rut this time as she is off the whole episode, seemingly uneasy at the fact she has no new challenges. I'm sure that'll change very soon.

Corben turns out not to be dead. Yet. An evil chick, who seems to work for the elusive Cadmus, decides to take a dying Corben and turn him into a monster called Metallo.

On the James and Kara front, they have decided to take three steps back and stay friends. Kara decides to take some time trying to figure out how to be her before she jumps into a new relationship. I bet that'll change in two weeks. They're on the CW now after all!

All and all, a strong start to this season. I wish we had gotten to see more about the man in the pod, but all in due time.We did get to see two new characters join, Lena Luthor and Superman. While everyone initially are in awe of Superman (And Clark Kent), Hank is less than impressed due to their past. It'll be interesting to see the relationship between Superman and Kara change as he shows up more throughout the season. As for Lena, I don't believe for one minute that she isn't evil. Maybe it's because Katie McGrath plays evil well, but she's a Luthor. But I have bets that the “assassination” attempt was staged.

The show managed to bring some interest to Superman without Kara being overshadowed on her own show, which was a great fear among fans. Hopefully this will still stay Kara Danvers’ story.
