Director Josh Boone Has Some Familiar Screenwriter Assistance on His NEW MUTANTS Script

In May 2015 it was revealed that director Josh Boone was tackling the development of the X-Men spin-off movie NEW MUTANTS with his friend and writer Knate Gwaltney. Boone and Gwantley have been busy with the script for over a year. Now, The Hollywood Reporter says Fox has brought on Boone's THE FAULT IN OUR STARS screenwriters to do some additional work on the script.

THR writes:

"Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the writing team behind the hit YA adaptationsThe Fault in Our Stars and The Spectacular Now, are working on the script for New Mutants, Fox's X-Men spinoff.
"The move re-teams the duo with Josh Boone — the Fault in Our Stars filmmaker who is directing Fox's take on the Marvel property that centers on a group of misfits trying to deal with their mutant powers — with whom they are working closely."

The news site also says the following mutant characters are a part of the current script: Danielle Moonstar, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball, Magik and the alien Warlock. Fox, producer Simon Kinberg or Boone have yet to confirmed the mutant roster.

Fox is looking to expand their X-Men movie franchise well beyond its main X-Men movies, especially since they are losing actor Hugh Jackman after next year's WOLVERINE 3, although they do have breakthrough star DEADPOOL and his sequel in development right now. NEW MUTANTS will hopefully be the next step toward expansion as long as there are no hiccups during its path to eventual principle photography, unlike GAMBIT which has been delayed multiple times and has lost two directors.

Adding a new set of writer eyes to NEW MUTANTS is a positive sign that progress is being made to getting the spin-off green lit soon. (In theory.)
