Editorial: ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN Used to be a Fun and Silly Show But it's Lost That Edge

I need to rant about Disney XD's ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN animated series and I know it can be a touchy topic for some Spidey fans. This is mainly due to the love they had for the previous animated show, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN, which many fans loved and still say was canceled too soon.

The problem lies with the fact that Disney bought Marvel and they wanted their own Spider-Man animated series on their own television channel. You can't blame Disney for doing this especially since THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN was a Sony-produced series so when Disney re-acquired the animation rights for Spidey from Sony, the writing was on the wall.

Nevertheless, and in my opinion, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN started off as a fresh and new TV series with fun banter, stupid little cutaways as well a little chibi versions of Spidey talking to himself in some of those cutaways. But something changed and changed for the worse in the last two years. I haven't seen any of those fun cutaways or silliness in ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN and the series seems to have lost its quirky edge.

Maybe I'm in the minority saying this but I am no longer a fan of ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN. Sure I still DVR it because it's good background TV during the day, but I'd prefer if it went back to being silly and fun. The show seems to be taking itself too serious anymore and while some fans may like this, it just doesn't feel like it's capturing the fun Spider-Man should be having and hasn't in this show for a while now.

Again, I might be wrong in making this claim but in my eyes I enjoyed the sillier ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN series as it was in its first two seasons (especially the Season 2 episode co-starring Deadpool!). The show has changed and, for me, it has changed for the worse.

UPDATE: There are others who agree the silly needs to return to the show because the show is too serious some parents can't even let their kids watch it. And this is a show that's supposed to be for kids being that it's on Disney XD.
