“I’m Rip Hunter... I’m here to rescue you.”
I was very back and forth on LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Episode 7. At some moments, I loved it. At other moments, I yawned a little. But in the end I was satisfied as a viewer and a fan. I think the story we were presented with was necessary and it moved our journey forward.
The stranded/rescue story device is always interesting no matter what situation, but that means we get a pretty big spotlight on the characters. That being said, I thought the time pirates as antagonists were pretty bland. Just because it’s a very team centric story, doesn’t mean our antagonists can’t be unique and complex. But on the other hand, it lets us take a big dip into the protagonists, which is something
I think was done very well in Episode 7.
I think it was a very good episode for Rip Hunter. It’s obvious to the audience that things are starting to weigh heavy on him. The flashbacks to his pre-time master past with his wife were great. It lets us see and understand his motivations for the things he does better. I still can’t make a decision on if Rip is acting selfish or not, an idea that was explored again in this episode. But I think that may be one of the biggest things I like about him as a character.
We all knew Mick was getting close to betraying the team. We could maybe even say it was predictable. But not everything can work out positively in a team’s journey. That’s what makes us want to watch it in the first place. I hope more is explored on if Snart really killed Rory. I think if anyone has made the most changes in our journey so far it may be The Rouges. It’s probably safe to say Snart has made his transformation into full anti-hero.
No complaints would come from me if Martin Stein continues to have moments of heroism in every episode from now on. I think his character is really blossoming in a way he never could on The Flash. In terms of the story and logistics, the problem of the time pirates could have been solved a lot quicker if Stein and Jax became Firestorm on Captain Baxter’s ship. But in the end I’m glad they didn’t, it gave a good human element to the story and took us away from metahumans and the immortals were used to being exposed to.
I don’t have too much input on the moments of Ray and Kendra. I did enjoy the mentions of Star Trek. I think it made the story fun. I’ve mentioned before, I could still do without the goofiness of Ray. The budding romance between the two seemed a little unnecessary for the story, but it could develop huge ramifications down the line when Savage or even the reincarnated Carter Hall comes back into the picture.
At times I though this episode was just a story-filler, but in the end it worked well. Plus it was a great bridge into what looks like a refreshing and exciting episode for next week!
