Editorial: At First I Wanted an Angry SUPERMAN, But Now I Just Want Him to Smile

It's been a week since I saw BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and there is a question that has been bothering me since my press screening.

Will Warner Bros. let actor Henry Cavill smile as Superman?

I'm not here to say he has never done it in MAN OF STEEL or BATMAN V. SUPERMAN because I honestly cannot remember. Maybe he has but once or twice, or more or perhaps never, but this has been bothering me.

First, let me backtrack for a moment.

I love Superman. From my younger days, I remember watching Christopher Reeves as Superman over and over again. Being a child of the late 70s, I didn't care how good or bad Reeves Superman sequels were because I just enjoyed watching Superman fly around, using his powers and helping humanity.

As I grew older, there came a point in my maturation when I didn't care for the boy scout version of Superman anymore and I began trying to get my Superman fix where he was really angry and pissed off a lot more. There were some comic book stories here and there that helped feed my desire for a legit angry Superman but not enough to ever fully satisfy it.

Then MAN OF STEEL was released and I found my answer as Henry Cavill's Superman was in fact angry, mad and he would let himself loose. Regardless, of the story issues in MAN OF STEEL, as well as any other nitpicking, I enjoyed seeing a version of Superman I've been looking to see my entire life.

So when it was time to attend my BATMAN V. SUPERMAN press screening I was excited for three things: (1.) Seeing if Ben Affleck could pull off Bruce Wayne / Batman. (2.) Seeing Wonder Woman be a badass on the big screen for the first time ever. And (3.) seeing Cavill as an angry Superman a little bit more.

All three of things things were checked off of my personal want list for this movie. However, at certain parts of the movie I realized my lifelong need of seeing an angry Superman was more than satisfied and I began to see the irony of the situation as Superman was always angry in BATMAN V. SUPERMAN. The tides had changed for my lifelong pursuit of an angry Superman and now I wanted to see a happy Superman.

So now I ask the question...

Will Warner Bros. let actor Henry Cavill smile as Superman?

I hope this answer surfaces soon because I can truthfully say that I've seen more than enough of an angry Superman in the past two movies and I actually want more of the boy scout version to be mixed in moving forward. And don't do a 180-degree turn and completely take away an angry Superman, but there's definitely no longer a need to only see him so angry all the time in the DC Extended Universe.
