BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: Reasoning For Those Bizarre "Knightmares"

***This post contains spoilers for BATMAN V. SUPERMAN. You've been warned.***

It can easily be said the biggest point of BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE was to set-up the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie. It's pretty clear in its subtitle.

But there are two key moments in the movie when Bruce Wayne is having his "knightmares" which propels the movie from being about just Batman, Superman and Lex Luthor to moving toward next year's JUSTICE LEAGUE ensemble film.

The moments referred to are both a bit bizarre and weird. While Bruce is decrypting his LexCorp hack, he falls asleep. (Or maybe he has a vision, again, this is one of the hardest moments in the movie to understand.) The Flash, then, appears in this dream/vision and says some hard-to-understand things to Bruce that are very important to the progression of the DC Extended Universe.

Flash tells Bruce (paraphrasing here) that Lois is the key, he came too soon, you were right about him and you've got to find us.

First, let's start with Lois being the key. This refers to Lois Lane not being killed because it'll only piss off Superman and the post-apocalyptic world seen in an earlier "knightmare" Bruce has will become reality. In that earlier "knightmare" an angry Superman blames Batman for Lois' death. All-in-all it's possible foreshadowing.

The part when Flash says he came too soon is most likely about his arrival in what appears to be a rift in time, worm hole or time travel or sorts. Flash probably needed to arrive later and sometime right before the moment when Lois dies so Bruce can prevent it. This is also implied in the part Flash says about being right about him. This is a reference to Bruce being right about Superman losing control and taking over the planet, as also seen in the earlier "knightmare."

Finally, Flash mentions the most important part which plants the seed in Bruce that he needs to find them. This is an implication of Bruce going out and finding Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman and forming the Justice League with Wonder Woman. As seen in the final moments of BATMAN V. SUPERMAN, you have Bruce talking with Diana Prince about finding all the meta-humans seen on the LexCorp hack and they'll need to fight. Of course as the Justice League to fight the implied coming of Darkseid — the reason for the winged parademons and huge Omega symbol on the ground in the earlier "knightmare," too.

In an interview with Collider, producer Deborah Snyder confirmed Flash's moment in the third "knightmare" is very important down the road citing her husband and BATMAN V. SUPERMAN director Zack saying the following.

"Oh my God let’s add this moment that is gonna pay off down the road, and we’ll find out more information."

What the "pay off down the road" will be is something fans will discuss, debate and speculate on for the next 18-plus months until JUSTICE LEAGUE releases on November 17, 2017.
