CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR - Actor Sebastian Stan Talks About the Mental State of Bucky / Winter Soldier

The last time actor Sebastian Stan truly played Bucky Barnes he was in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER when he was last seen falling off of a speeding train to an assumed frozen death. That didn't happen as literally as it played out because in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Stan reprised his role but as the brainwashed Hydra assassin the Winter Soldier.

Now in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, Stan is back again but this time his portrayal of Bucky / Winter Soldier is as complex as ever as Steve Rogers' best friend is trying to get himself right, mentally speaking. Talking with Collider during their Civil War set visit, Stan revealed where fans will find Bucky / Winter Soldier.

"Where we find the character is really where he’s at the post-credits scene at the end of Winter Soldier. So that’s where he picks up in this film. It very much is a big struggle, figuring out what his life has been about and what he’s really been up to. That’s what I think the similarity between them is. They’re men out of time, struggling to embrace this new life, and how do they do it."

Stan did refer to how he's playing his character's mental struggles similarly to the Captain America comic book story arc, written by Ed Brubaker, which served as a basis for The Winter Soldier movie.

"I feel like it’s pretty given if you know the comics. He’s in a place where he’s not very stable or healthy environment in his head. So he could easily go either way.
"I’m just trying to tie in to what we know in the comic books. I think it’s going to be a mix of different things. He’s not gonna go back and be the guy he used to be. There’s just no way that would happen. He’s definitely, probably affected for life. It’s sort of learning about how you live with who you are now. Learning how to tame that wild beast that is a part of you at this point."

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR releases on May 6.
