Toy Fair 2016 Interview With Funko About Development Process For STAR WARS POPs and DOCTOR STRANGE Movie Figures Are Coming


While at Toy Fair 2016 in New York, The Daily SuperHero was able to speak directly with Funko's marketing manager Yoko McCann. So let's jump right into some insight to Funko's development process for its movie POP figures.

For their STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS POP figures the process started approximately a year before the movie was out. However, the process wasn't easy for Funko's artists and designers as they didn't have much to work with due to Lucasfilm's request for extreme secrecy.

"For our Star Wars designer, [Lucasfilm] wouldn’t give him any images and that was probably a year before the movie came out. And he got to see a video clip and sketch from there. They wouldn’t email anything," McCann said but also noted this is their most extreme example when it comes to product development. "Usually they get photos of people in their costume from different angles. 
"It will go through several stages of approval and sometimes the paint color doesn’t match," McCann said regarding the standard procedure for design development. "For approval, designers will send photos of hand painted prototypes and there's about a 4 month approval process before manufacturing begins."

She then briefly spoke about Marvel and revealed that Funko is now working on their DOCTOR STRANGE movie products.

"[The artists] are just now starting to work on Doctor Strange movie figures."

But for the POP collectors hoping for a Quicksilver movie figure, don't hold your breath because The Daily SuperHero was told that is not happening.

Moving on to some quick DC information. While no firm confirmation for SUICIDE SQUAD variants and exclusives could be made, if there are to be any McCann said they would be announced when Funko officially reveals the full SUICIDE SQUAD POP line on their website's blog.
