STAR WARS EPISODE VIII Script is So Good that J.J. Abrams Has Some Regret For Not Returning to Direct

J.J. Abrams is not directing STAR WARS EPISODE VIII (or IX) although he will be an executive producer for the remaining episodes. But he certainly wishes he was returning to direct after reading the script by Episode VIII writer/director Rian Johnson. The story in Episode VIII is a continuation of Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan's overall Sequel Trilogy story outline. So Abrams' overall vision is still being laid out by Johnson; as well as in Episode IX by director Colin Trevorrow.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Abrams' close friend, actor Greg Grunberg, who also had a small role in The Force Awakens, disclosed that not only has the STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS writer and director read the Episode VIII script, by Johnson, but he's never seen so much regret wash over Abrams in the years they've know each other.

"[J.J.] read it and said something he never, ever says," Grunberg said about Abrams' reaction to Episode VIII's script. "He said, 'It's so good, I wish I were making it... but I never hear him express regret like that."

Hearing such a ringing endorsement should get the every Star Wars fan excited about the new movie which will have a much larger focus on Luke Skywalker. Also, if a readable script is in place then look for an official subtitle announcement from Lucasfilm and Disney soon.

STAR WARS EPISODE VIII releases on May 26, 2017.
