Marvel Reportedly Close to Finding BLACK PANTHER Writer; Director Hire Won't Happen Until Story is in Place

There's been a bunch of rumors surrounding who might direct Marvel's BLACK PANTHER over the past 24 hours. Yesterday, an initial knee-jerk reaction had nearly every website talking about how Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray might be in the running but he is reportedly now in talks to direct Fast and Furious 8 instead.

According to a new report by TheWrap, Gray is no longer in the running and Marvel Studios is not looking at any directors until they have a story in place first. Speaking of a still unwritten BLACK PANTHER script, TheWrap is also reporting the studio has eyes for Joe Robert Cole to potentially write the script.

If you're not familiar with Cole you're not the only one because he has only written one Indie film called Amber Lake. But Cole is an alum of the Marvel Writing Program from several years back. The program was developed to take Marvel heroes and craft script treatments and/or screenplays for possible movies. This is how GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY came to be as Nicole Perlman wrote the first draft of Guardians which was then adapted and re-written by writer/director James Gunn.

Cole reportedly wrote an early draft for INHUMANS when he was in the program and now he might get a crack at the big leagues with BLACK PANTHER.

BLACK PANTHER releases on July 6, 2018.
