ANT-MAN Editorial: The Trendy Marvel Studios Topic Continues With Another Weak Movie Villain

Editorial Note: This post contain a few ANT-MAN spoilers.

Listen I'm a huge Marvel fan, make no mistake about this, but I love the bad guys. From Darth Vader to Megatron to Magneto to Loki, I like to cheer for the bad guys because I usually feel bad for them because they are misunderstood. Maybe this is a part of my past and seeing some real world villainy first-hand as a child or maybe because a movie is only as good as its villain. Whatever the reason really is I'm not sure, but I've always been drawn to the villains.

Most of Marvel's films are the exception because I love the heroes more than the villains but this really isn't by my choice because the villains in Marvel movies are more subpar than top notch. Obviously Loki and Magneto are the exceptions in any Marvel films because they have had more character development and screen time than any other villain.

The problem is really that Marvel movies are all about their heroes more than their villains. Again, Magneto and Loki are the two exceptions to the rule while most villains are one-and-done. Meaning they get one film to be in and that's it. Heck, I'd love Dr. Doom to finally get his due on the big screen but I have doubts that will even happen when he returns in a reboot.

I can go on and on about how the studio doesn't develop their villains and "offs" them in one movie but it's something that has become a trendy topic as of late. And ANT-MAN is just another movie to continue this discussion topic. This isn't the fault of actor Corey Stoll or even director Peyton Reed. It's more about the trend Marvel Studios has developed with their villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe moves into its Phase 3 of films, hopefully the studio will develop some of their villains over the course of several films. Thanos has been waiting in the distance and he will get his time to shine once Infinity War begins and don't forget that Red Skull is still a mystery after being swept away by the Tesseract.

Plus, the Mandarin is still lurking somewhere in the shadows and hopefully you caught the 10 Rings tattoo one guy had in the ANT-MAN scene when Cross shoots Hank Pym. It was a quick glimpse but it was definitely there. [To read more about the 10 Rings in ANT-MAN, click here.]

In the end, Marvel has a huge catalog of heroes and villains but as time goes on their villain list will become smaller and smaller so it's time to not kill villains and start putting them away into the Raft or the Vault. Both are comic book universe prisons for super villains and it's time to bring one of these prisons into the MCU so every villain is not killed.
