An homage is not an Easter Egg. Sadly, all it takes is one website to say 'Easter Egg' and then every other site picks up the story at face value instead of realizing the simple fact Marvel Studios has taken an element that has been seen in Phase 2 movies and made an homage to Star Wars. (Yay for Disney synergy!)
In an interview with Cinema Blend, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige disclosed his love for Star Wars and that there is slight Star Wars influence in all Phase 2 movies. Quick note: The following is a SPOILER ALERT for AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and ANT-MAN, so read at your own risk.
"So is this a spoiler for Ant-Man… not really. I’m obsessed with Star Wars. Who’s not? I’m 40 years old. I’m in the movie business. I went to USC. So I’m obsessed with Star Wars - and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional, including that beat that you referenced. It sort of happens in every Star Wars movie, but I was sort of looking at it, ‘Okay, is Phase Two our Empire Strikes Back?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different. Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one."
What a fun homage to STAR WARS EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!
So in IRON MAN 3 Aldrich Killian gets his arm chopped. In THOR: THE DARK WORLD, Loki and Thor pull a prank on Malekith by pretending to chop off Thor's hand. In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, Bucky is shown in a flashback without his arm. And finally in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, Gamora chops off Groot's arm.
Obviously, fans are going to see someone lose an arm in Age of Ultron and ANT-MAN and it's safe to assume that Ultron or an Ultron drone will lose an arm which leaves ANT-MAN a mystery. But let's not dwell on that because it'll be best as a surprise when you see ANT-MAN in your theater seat.
