Female GHOSTBUSTERS Reboot in Trouble? GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Still Has a Chance, too? Huh?!?

Only a Sony Pictures project could be so damn confusing that even one of their movie rights owners cannot even give a straight answer as to what the heck is happening with the Ghostbusters franchise. Let me lay out what's happening right now as succinctly as possible.

Sony greenlit a female-led Ghostbuster reboot that may or may not be a true reboot for the franchise but it still could reference the past Ghostbusters films (huh?!?). The main cast is set for this reboot which has many original, hardcore Ghostbusters fans angry about this entire reboot (see comments sections of nearly every online post about the reboot).

But after this past weekend's big Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special, creator and movie rights owner Dan Aykroyd has thrown a curveball in a new report via SlashFilm.

"I can tell you, as the originator, I’m very happy with what [director Feig’s] done. It’s very tasteful. And it needed a reworking. The thing needed a new engine. You know? It needed new exhaust. It needed new steering. And this is what we’re getting."

Sounds like lots of tinkering is being done to this female Ghostbusters reboot which also sounds like Aykroyd is very active in the development of this potential sequel. Does this mean there is trouble for the reboot? Maybe but we will have to wait for more Sony hacks to reveal those potential issues (couldn't resist taking that jab).

However, and regardless of the reboot, it sounds like Aykroyd is still developing a true Ghostbusters 3 movie which will be a direct sequel in the franchise.

"Oh I’ve written… well, we have…I’ve written, well, there’s three drafts of the old concept that exists. And we’re going to be able to salvage some of it and use it. Yeah, we’re gonna be able to use it some day. Let’s get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise and then we’ll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning and another idea I have for it."

Aykroyd is very protective of the Ghostbusters franchise, otherwise more films would have been released by now, so the fact he's still thinking about a true threequel could mean trouble for the reboot. Maybe.
