Talking to Myself About THOR: RAGNAROK and How it May Affect Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Sometimes I like to talk to myself and being an only child it is quite alright and not a sign that I'm close to madness. After Marvel Studios dropped their Phase 3 lineup yesterday, there is one movie that really stands out and I need to talk about.

So how are you feeling today after all those amazing Marvel Studios announcements?

Feeling like I have a hangover but in the best way possible.

There's a lot to talk about but I'd like to focus on Thor: Ragnarok because studio head Kevin Feige said it's the most important piece of the Phase 3 lineup just like how Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the most important film in Phase 2.

Okay, let's do this.

First, do you think we will see an adaptation for the comic book version of Ragnarok?

I don't think so. I think it is more of a reference to the Norse mythology of Ragnarok which is pretty much their version of apocalypse, and I'm not referring to the X-Men villain.

Of course, since Fox is making a movie starring that villain he is not in the equation. But in the comics version of Ragnarok, Thor is presumed dead so Tony Stark uses one of his hairs and clones him. Do you think this is probable in the third Thor movie?

I seriously hope not.  Bringing cloning into the MCU could mean the Clone Wars are coming and moviegoers have already experienced that on the big screen. Haha.

I see what you did there with Marvel and Star Wars since they're both owned by Disney.

But seriously, I think Ragnarok is purely by name and more of a reference to the pending doom/attack that is coming to Asgard.

Oooo... please go on!

Sure but remember this is all my own speculation. Right now Loki was last seen, at the end of Thor: The Dark World, on the throne of Asgard posing as Odin. What Loki should know is that Thanos is coming for him for his failure in the Battle of New York. Thanos gave Loki a powerful scepter and an alien army and Loki lost the scepter and a tremendous amount of the Chitauri were 'smashed.' This failure could lead to Thanos arriving at Asgard as the bringer of Ragnarok (a.k.a. the apocalypse) and wants his revenge on Loki. Meanwhile, Thanos realizes there's a gauntlet that can house all the Infinity Stones and he takes it from Asgard.

Whoa! Wait a second and let me see if I understand your theory. You say Ragnarok is just a term or reference used for Thanos attacking Asgard because Loki failed him and then Thanos steals the Infinity Gauntlet from Asgard's vault?

Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying which is why this film is the most important in Phase 3 because Thanos gets the Infinity Gauntlet. Oh yeah... and Thanos gets his first Infinity Stone, the Tesseract, since it's in the Asgard vault, too.

Got it. Based on this theory, do you think Thanos will have a large role in Thor: Ragnarok?

This is a part where I'm not sure because, so far, Thanos has been such a 'behind the scenes' type of mastermind villain and it would make sense to continue this process. Perhaps he sends another minion to attack Asgard and then Thanos swoops in once the battle is in his favor. Only then does he locate the Infinity Gauntlet and Tesseract. I'm just spitballin' here though.

It would makes sense to have Thanos on his rocket throne and not partake in any possible battle until the end. So who would lead this theoretical battle against Asgard?

Great question and I would have to guess someone like the Enchantress with her right hand man the Executioner

What about Surtur?

Meh... If Thor: Ragnarok is as important to the direction of Phase 3, as Captain America: The Winter Soldier was to the direction of Phase 2, then it's time to really start setting up Thanos and the Infinity War.

So you would like to see a female villain?

Yes. I would love to see a strong and powerful female villain who can stand toe-to-toe with Loki and Thor.

Speaking of Thor, I would have to guess he will arrive to help Loki fight off this potential attack on Asgard?

That's what I'm thinking too. Teaming up Thor and Loki is how these two characters work best in the MCU and once again I think they will team-up.

Any other thoughts or twists you can see being thrown into the mix for this movie?

I do have one more idea that is kind of a wild card. At some point during the battle of Asgard, Thor is fighting a warrior from the alien race known as Korbinites. The warrior is powerful and knocks Thor around a bit and when he sees Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, on the ground he attempts to pick it up to use it against Thor and miraculously picks it up. He becomes the first to ever be worthy, besides Thor, to wield the hammer... he is Beta Ray Bill.

Oh my... that would be awesome!

Beta Ray Bill then helps turn the tide of the attack but it's too late because Thanos already acquired the Infinity Gauntlet and the Tesseract.

That part about Beta Ray Bill may be a bit far-fetched, however, I'm sure fans would love to see another Thunder God arise at some point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Agreed and that's all I got right now.

Definitely some plausible things to think about here.

Thanks.

Thor: Ragnarok releases in theaters on July 28, 2017.
