AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.: Agent Coulson's Resurrection is a Dark and Magical Story

"Tahiti is a magical place."

You've heard Agent Phil Coulson say this several times throughout the first four episodes of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD television show. But what does this mean?

Back in July, The Daily SuperHero wrote about how the ongoing story line for Agents of SHIELD's season one will revolve around what happened to Agent Coulson after Loki impaled him on the Helicarrier prior to the Battle of New York, in The Avengers. (See the story link below.) So far, through its first four episodes, it seems like that was a correct assessment.

In a recent interview with Larry King, Agent Coulson actor Clark Gregg teased about his character's resurrection and this magical place where he recovered, in Tahiti.

"You know that Phil Coulson just thinks that he had a close call," Gregg said The Avengers writer/director and Agents of SHIELD co-creator Joss Whedon explained to him about Coulson's return. "But as it is in the comics, there’s a kind of mythology there. There’s a much darker and more interesting story. It’s a mystery. Something much more magical has gone on to bring this guy back to life it seems.”

But what about Tahiti?

“Tahiti is a magical place," Gregg said, just like he says in the TV show. "I keep saying that. It’s where I went to recover after being impaled. And as I say in the pilot, it was a spectacular experience. I had a beautiful physical therapist, and I read Travis McGee novels all day.
“But every time someone mentions it lately, I seem to go into post-traumatic stress, so I think there’s a little more to Tahiti than meets the eye."

However, Gregg does not know the full details about Coulson's return to the land of the living.

“I know more than the audience, but less than the writers. I know a little bit. I have some hints. I know from what Joss told me roughly where we’re headed. But a lot of it I don’t know, and I kind of like that. I’m finding it out as the audience does.”

Season one is sure to close with all the answers provided surrounding Coulson's return but until the end of its first season, get ready to be teased with hints and bits and pieces of what really happened. Hopefully, Marvel won't drag it out to torturously though.
