Fox has definitely taken a step in the right direction with regards to their X-Men movie universe now that The Wolverine is a success, and looks to have the character back on track, and the hype for X-Men Days of Future Past is bigger than ever after the Trask Industries viral website has revealed the Mark I Sentinel. The buzz surrounding an X-Force movie being in development helps too.
X-Force writer Jeff Wadlow seems to be at the forefront of the potential X-movie universe expansion and he has been getting more questions about his X-Force movie script that he is currently writing than about his current film which is about to hit theaters, Kick-Ass 2. Makes sense seeing as how superhero movies are as popular as ever after The Avengers became the third highest grossing movie of all-time.
Wadlow recently spoke with Collider.com for the upcoming Kick-Ass 2 release and he touched on the topic of building a much larger Fox X-movie universe by expanding it with more X-teams instead of solo mutant films.
"Basically when [Fox] announced that Mark [Millar] was going to be overseeing the title for Fox … basically, they were talking about all these different ideas for franchises they could build and characters, and I said, 'X-Force. Gotta do an X-Force movie.' And they originally said, 'Maybe that’s a second step.' And I said, 'No, it’s about teams.' That’s what, to me, the X-universe is about. It’s not about doing movies with individual characters and then bringing them together in a team; that’s what Marvel already did with The Avengers.
"I think the next step is to have these teams and see how they bounce off of each other, that’s where you can have crossover potential. I said, 'The first one’s gotta be X-Force and I want to do it. What’s it going to take?' Mark was really supportive and he’s just been a tremendous ally of mine. I’m really grateful that he went to Fox and said, 'This is the guy.'"
In the comics there are so many different versions of X-teams the possibilities are endless. So does this mean there could be more X-Men movies, an Uncanny X-Men movie, an X-Force movie, an Uncanny X-Force movie, a New Mutants movie and maybe even an X-Static movie all down the road with crossovers? Maybe.
