CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Footage at D23 Shows Off a Stealth Mission Steve Rogers

Once Captain America's new suit was confirmed at Comic-Con to be a stealth suit (and shield) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it was only a matter of time until fans would hear more details about a stealth-mode Steve Rogers. At Disney's D23 Expo Marvel Studios aired a new clip from next year's Cap sequel and this clip, while unfinished, showed exactly this.

Here is a description of the footage shown, courtesy of Slash Film:

"The footage was in black and white, featuring unfinished animation and animatics. It’s a very rough early clip. Cap and Black Widow are passengers in a plane, bantering, talking about what they have planned for the upcoming weekend. Black Widow: 'You doing anything Saturday night?' Cap: 'All the guys from my barbershop quartet are dead, so, you know.'
"Cap gets ready to jump out as the plane is over water. Is he wearing a parachute? Nope! Cap just flies through the sky, no ‘chute, and dives into the water feet first. Nearby is a huge cargo ship, rendered via animatic in the clip’s current state. There are many guards on the ship, but Cap climbs up the anchor chain to the deck. He silently takes out one guard, and throws his shield at another. In short order, cap runs around the perimeter of the deck, just kicking ass. At a dead run, he takes out almost a dozen guards. Some go down with just one hit.

"One guy is about to pull a fire alarm, but Cap throws a knife through his hand. This is a more brutal Captain America—a one-man black ops squad. There’s no dialogue in this sequence; just fighting. Cap’s fighting techniques are way more modern than the last time we saw him. He’s learned new moves; the action in general is much more hard-hitting and intense.

"Finally, Frank Grillo parachutes down and helps take out one guy. Black Widow also lands on the ship, and begins shooting some of the remaining guards. Despite the setting and action, she’s still in weekend mode. Black Widow: 'How about the nurse who stays across the hall from you? She seems nice.' Cap: 'You don’t have to get me a date.'
"That was the cut point, and the reaction to the clip was huge."

Sounds like Steve Rogers will be beating up a lot of people with his fists, in the sequel. One interesting point is that it sounds like Rumlow is working on the same mission both Rogers and Widow are on. This will make for some great added drama having former S.H.I.E.L.D. teammates fighting each other, when S.H.I.E.L.D. sides are rumored to split, later in the movie.

UPDATED with another footage description below, via Bleeding Cool:

"As well as showing the Comic Con reel again—and it was good stuff, so I’d have been glad to see it—there was also the premiere of a new scene in rough form. This showed Cap and Black Widow on board a SHIELD vehicle—it flies but was likely too small to be another Helicarrier. They’re gearing up for a parachute jump and flirting a little.
"When Cap jumps he lands on the deck of a ship and immediately ends up in the middle of a big, elaborately choreographed action sequence. Pretty soon Black Widow and Brock Rumlow, aka Crossbones, land and help him finish up the fight—while Cap and Black Widow get back into their banter about all the girls who would definitely agree to go out with him.
"It’s a scene that obviously takes place before the elevator fight shown at Comic Con because Rumlow appears to be no more than a straight SHIELD agent."

Per Entertainment Weekly:

It begins with a crudely animated quinjet flying through the clouds. Inside, Captain America and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow are strap-hanging, and making awkward conversation.
“Doing anything fun Saturday night?” she asks.
“Well, all the guys from my barbershop quartet are dead, so … ” he responds.
As Cap prepares to skydive from the plane, wearing his gray-scale stealth uniform, she says bluntly: “If you asked Kristen out from statistics, she would probably say yes.”
This is a subject for which Cap has no shield. He prepares to dive.
“Too shy or too scared?” Black Widow asks.
“Too busy,” he says, plunging from the back of the quinjet.
Frank Grillo, playing the S.H.I.E.L.D. operative Crossbones, notes that he fell with no parachute. We then see rough animation of Cap swandiving thousands of feet to make an Olympics-worthy plunge into the ocean beside a cargo ship, loaded with menacing men carrying machine guns.
Cap climbs aboard via the anchor chain, and begins silently taking out the mercenaries, ninja-style, the only sound the clanging of his shield against their craniums.
Once the bad guys are neutralized, Crossbones floats down on a parachute to take out the last one.
“Thanks,” Cap says.
“You seemed pretty helpless without me,” Grillo’s character replies.
Black Widow then lands and picks up right where she intrusively left off: “What about the nurse who lives across the hall from you? She seems nice.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is out in theaters on April 4, 2014.
