Director James Gunn on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY: "We Are Starting the Marvel Cosmic Cinematic Universe"
This is what was thought by many when Marvel Studios announced that Guardians of the Galaxy would be their August 1, 2014 Phase 2 film release at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Fast-forward one year and many fans who were lucky enough to see the first footage of next year's Marvel space film are thrilled at the what was shown of the "anti-hero hero team." (That's what Zoe Saldana called it at SDCC last weekend.)
Director James Gunn recently spoke with HitFix.com and talked about how introducing Guardians of the Galaxy to the general public is no bigger of a risk than when Marvel release the first Iron Man.
"The truth is when 'Iron Man' came out, basically nobody knew who Iron Man was," Gunn said. "'Iron Man'...they sold 15,000 copies of 'Iron Man' a month. That's not enough to even make the first million dollars or whatever. So it really isn't any different...we are starting the wing of Marvel that is the Marvel Cosmic Cinematic Universe. This is Marvel Cosmic. And we're doing exactly what they did with the first 'Iron Man.'"
Gunn continued to talk about the highly anticipated furry, gun-toting Rocket Raccoon and how he is the make or break part of the entire movie.
"Rocket [Raccoon] is the heart of this movie," Gunn told HitFix following the 'surprise' 'Guardians of the Galaxy' panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. "If Rocket doesn't work the movie's not gonna work. If Rocket does work the movie's gonna work. And so for me, the whole time it's been about making something that some people could think of as a cartoon or a ridiculous character into a real creature. If a raccoon really was able to walk and talk and make machines and shoot a gun, how would that really happen? How could that occur? And so for me it's about grounding everything in reality."
Will Marvel Studios have another blockbuster and their version of Yoda, with Rocket, in Guardians of the Galaxy? Or will they have a movie that just doesn't make sense because a talking raccoon and giant tree monster ("I AM GROOT!") come off a bit cheesy?
This is Marvel Studios so except the former and another blockbuster.
