DESPICABLE ME 2 Review: The Minions Totally Deliver an Entertaining Sequel

When the first Despicable Me came out not many knew if it would perform as well as it did in the box office. Luckily, the little Minions helped make the film a ton of money. Now Despicable Me 2 is releasing and once again the Minions deliver.

This is a quick SPOILER-FREE review, by the way!

While the studio will most likely say this is a franchise about Gru and his adopted girls, the franchise is held together by those little Minion buddies. (Don't forget there's a scheduled Minion movie set to release during the 2014 holiday season too!) The sequel takes the Minions up a notch by introducing the evil purple Minions. Unfortunately the new versions of the Minions, albeit they are adorably ugly, do not have enough screen time. A small issue, for sure, but the little yellow guys are the reason to go and see the sequel.

Kids will obviously love the Minions but more importantly adults will love them as well. The slapstick humor and violence the Minions engage in with each other is very reminiscent of the old school Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry cartoons which produce lots of laughs and a very high entertainment value.

In today's cartoons, so much has been held back compared to older cartoons but the Minions break through this modern day mold to give adult viewers a sense of nostalgia  This isn't to say their slapstick interaction is too violent for young kids but it is just the right amount to make all ages smile and enjoy all of it.

Gru is no longer the bad guy—he wasn't the villain of the first film as well—and he's been recruited to be a spy for the good guys now. He is also partnered up with a quirky female, who holds her own although walking the line of almost being annoying. And Gru's girls do have a decent amount of screen time too but the Minions are still the glue that holds everything together.

If there's just one animated sequel to go and see with the family this summer, and that is made to give laughs to all ages, it is definitely Despicable Me 2.
