Is the director of Star Wars: Episode VII going to be Matthew Vaughn since he suddenly left X-Men: Days of Future Past?

As soon as Star Wars: Episode VII was announced to be coming out in 2015, every director either gasped at the chance to helm the next big epic adventure in a galaxy far, far away or gasped at how much pressure would be on the next person to direct it.

In a recent set of rumors, a bunch of names were listed as being on Disney's want list of directors. On this list were names: Steven Spielberg, Joss Whedon, Matthew Vaughn, Neill Blomkamp, Darren Aronofsky, Brad Bird and Alfonso Cuaron.

Right away you'd have to think Spielberg is not a realistic option since he is co-founder of his own large studio—who is one of Disney' biggest competitors—at Dreamworks. Whedon is tied up with Disney. Also not available is Whedon. He is heading up Marvel Studios' Phase 2 set of superhero movies through the half-point of 2015 and Episode VII is set to come out in 2015, so he's out.

This leaves some other interesting candidates but one name really stands out right now and that is Matthew Vaughn. He just recently left the director's chair of X-Men: Days of Future Past—a follow-up to his X-Men Origins: First Class movie. His shocking and sudden departure was only a couple of days prior to Disney's announcement of their acquisition of Star Wars too.

Maybe this is just a coincidence in timing but Vaughn was said to be leaving the X-Men movie in order to direct another movie called Secret Service but this has yet to be confirmed by Vaughn or creator Mark Millar. In other words, there is a chance that Vaughn could have left X-Men for Star Wars, especially since Vaughn was signed up for the next X-Men movie since January 2012. Usually, a director won't put in over 10 months of work toward their next movie unless there is a movie project that cannot be passed up. Maybe Star Wars was the project. Maybe not.

This post is really just an attempt to put some puzzle pieces together but there are rumblings about it being true in some insider groups. And let's all be honest with ourselves and say, who wouldn't drop everything they were doing to take on the next Star Wars movie?
