Iron Man 3 News and Rumors Round-Up: What We Already Know - SPOILER ALERT

With the 2012 San Diego Comic Con less than two weeks away, Marvel Studios officially made the announcement they will be present for what will be the largest panel of the convention. Now it's time to explore what we already know about Iron Man 3 before any new announcements are made at their hour-long panel.

This is all information which has been online in the past few months, plus some speculation on our part to start putting some puzzle pieces together, but if you still do not want to know details about the third Iron Man movie, then please stop reading right now. Otherwise there are SPOILERS ahead.


Brief movie synopsis

Described as a “technological crisis thriller,” set in the world of international war, arms & terror (kind of sounds a bit James Bond-esque), Marvel Studios' “Iron Man 3” stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Ashley Hamilton, James Badge Dale, with Sir Ben Kingsley and Jon Favreau. Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”) takes over directorial duties from Jon Favreau, who helmed the first two “Iron Man” films. Principal photography will occur primarily in North Carolina and China. And “Iron Man 3” is set for release in May 3, 2013.


Loosely based on writer Warren Ellis' comic story arc 'Extremis'

Part of Iron Man 3's plot is rumored to revolve around the 'Extremis' story.  The use of a nanotechnology virus, which is a threat to national security and the world, is most likely the reference to the comic. In theory, this is when S.H.I.E.L.D. will be making an appearance in Iron Man 3, however their presence in the film is said to be minimal despite actress Cobie Smulders being listed on IMDb reprising her role as Maria Hill. This virus is most likely released by a terrorist organization ran be some of the brightest scientists on the planet.


Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) to play a big role with actor Guy Pierce as bad-guy scientist

A.I.M. is most likely the group whom creates the nanotech virus and Pierce plays Dr. Aldrich Killian, who is said to be a villian-like character in the movie and potentially the creator of this virus too. A.I.M.'s leader in the comic universe, M.O.D.O.K. is said to not have a role in this movie at all but do not be surprised is there is indeed some kind of Easter egg reference to him.

Also actress Rebecca Hall is playing Maya Hansen, who works with Dr. Killian in the 'Extremis' story arc.


Firepower to cameo in an attempt to take down Iron Man?

Actor Ashley Hamilton has been signed on to play Jack Taggert—known as Firepower in the comics—who is another lesser-known villain that tests an experimental suit which is designed to take down Iron Man and this suit could be the result of A.I.M. scientists as well. Or Taggert is not in a suit at all in order to not add too many villains in suits to face-off against Iron Man.


Actor William Sadler rumored to be Stark's mentor

Sadler was one of the later additions to the cast and his role is pivotal in the movie being that he is rumored to be seen as one of Stark's mentors while Tony is in his twenties but he is also might be killed by a villain who is lurking behind the scenes.


Enter the Mandarin

Fans have been waiting for him and Sir Ben Kingsley is the evil villain Mandarin but only said to have limited screen time. He is more of a bigger threat off-screen and the main bad guy behind the scenes who is manipulating the events in the third movie.

Mandarin is known for being one of Iron Man's greatest archenemies in the comics and he is the wielder of the 10 rings of power. Whether Kinglsey's version will actually have 10 rings of power, literally on his fingers as in the comics, remains to be seen but we already know the 10 Rings is also a terrorist organization and was the group who initially kidnapped Tony Stark in the first film. In other words, look for both the 10 Rings and A.I.M. to both be working against Stark and the Armored Avenger.


Actor James Badge Dale is Coldblood

Coldblood is definitely not one of the more relevant bad guys in the comics universe so there is a chance his role may be a small one and he could have less screen time than most might assume. He may simply be a result of some nanotech experimentation by A.I.M. or the 10 Rings.

Marvel Studios could take liberties with this character since he is not a mainstay in the comic universe.


War Machine either gets a secondary suit or a new suit altogether

When photos leaked, from the North Carolina set, showing the Iron Patriot suit a collective knee-jerk reaction happened online almost immediately when everyone assumed the man in the suit was actor Badge Dale. It turned out to be a stunt man then another report said the Iron Patriot suit is nothing like it is in the comics—where is it used for evil by Norman Osborn, as the leader of the Dark Avengers—and instead the suit is really War Machine.

It is still a mystery whether this is War Machine's new suit or, as we have speculated, just a secondary suit worn by Col. James Rhodes when making public appearances to give War Machine some patriotic flare. (Like how military personel have their 'dress attire' for special occasions/events).
