Since debuting in Iron Man 2 as an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent posing as one of Tony Stark's lawyers, the Black Widow was on the receiving end of increased screen time in The Avengers and kicked a bunch of Chitauri alien butt too.

Actress Scarlett Johansson hopes this is only the beginning for the Black Widow's on-screen adventures and hopes a prequel/origin film is in the character's future.

"I love her origin story. I think it's just such a riveting one," Johansson said, per Huffington Post. "It's just steeped in history and the richness to shoot in Russia, perhaps."

Johansson thinks fan support will help a stand-alone Black Widow film to be made.

"I hope that the fans' voice is loud enough and they want to see a Widow origin story, I know Marvel would be happy to entertain that," Johansson said. "We've spoken a lot about it."

Whether a Black Widow film happens remains to be seen but there is also speculation a stand-alone S.H.I.E.L.D. movie could be in the works instead and could focus on the Black Widow, along with Nick Fury and Hawkeye.

In The Avengers (spoiler alert), the Black Widow's past was briefly touched on and we already know she was to be assassinated by Hawkeye, who then decided to not kill her. She also hints at the fact she was somewhat brainwashed or had some form of brain rehabilitation during her conversation with Hawkeye after he's recovering from being under Loki's mind control.

Nothing has been confirmed by Marvel but it seems support has grown for the Black Widow, just as it has for the Incredible Hulk, because of her performance in The Avengers. Anything is possible now that Marvel and Disney have taken a firm hold over the genre.
