Iron Man 3 News: Ben Kingsley Could be Mandarin and More Extremis Plot

Pre-production is underway on Iron Man 3 and the film is believed to be following the Extremis story line for the basis of its plot.

Actor Ben Kingsley has been in talks to play a villain in the new film. His character will be involved in the release of a virus through nanobots, per Variety.

Some believe Kingsley could play the villain Mandarin but, per the Variety report, it seems that's not the case. The Hollywood Reporter's sources say otherwise.

"Insiders say there is a chance Kingsley will play the Mandarin, but because the script is still being written, the character might be reconfigured for silver-screen presentation. The Mandarin’s classic traits might be merged with a nanotechnological virus seen in a storyline titled 'Extremis,'" THR's sources said.

Before director Shane Black was at the helm of the third film, former Iron Man director Jon Favreau spoke about having the Mandarin in the third flick during a press stop for Iron Man 2 with MTV.com.

"You've got to do the Mandarin. The problem with the Mandarin is that the way it's depicted in the comic books, you don't want to see that," Favreau said to MTV.com. "He has 10 magical rings—that just doesn't feel right for [the franchise].

"So it's either tech-based, or the rings are not really rings."

Seeing as how Warren Ellis' Extremis story revolves around nanotechnology, it sounds like Extremis will be the basis for the third film moving forward so the Mandarin could be more tech-based as Favreau previously said. And by the way, Favreau is still one of the film's executive producers so all of this is still highly probable.
