According to Deadline, SUPERMAN has opened with $125 million domestically and a worldwide total gross of $220 million besting the worldwide opening of MAN OF STEEL which took in $200 million back in 2015.
Editor note: Article was first published on Sunday and has been updated with the official box office numbers from the Monday reports.
This marks James Gunn's second largest opening weekend behind GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, which took in over $146 million domestically.
Word of mouth, as well as good reviews, are powering the last son of Krypton's box office surge as it was initially projected to open in the $100 million range and blew past that prediction. Surely, it will continue to print money in the coming weekends until rival Marvel Studios releases FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS on July 25.
It remains to be seen if SUPERMAN can cross over into the $1 billion club, but regardless, it is a great start to Gunn's new DC Universe (DCU) with the next film coming on June 26, 2026 with SUPERGIRL, starring Milly Alcock.
