The dust has settled from Marvel Studios' THUNDERBOLTS* opening weekend and the numbers are in!
According to Deadline, Marvel's newest IP franchise took in a solid $76 million opening domestically. While this number might not scream $100 million opening weekend, the word of mouth is very strong with this movie as well as its audience scores.
Deadline reports:
"With an A- CinemaScore, plus other great exists in PostTrak and Rotten Tomatoes, Disney is hoping that Thunderbolts* holds better than recent less-than-$100M openers, i.e. Eternals ($71.2M, -62% second weekend drop, B CinemaScore, $164.8M final) and Captain America: Brave New World ($88.8M opening, -68% second weekend plummet, B- CinemaScore, $200.2M domestic final). With 38% women giving Thunderbolts* an A, there’s anticipation that more of them will show up next weekend for Mothers Day... Also, Thunderbolts* skewed young at 62% under 35, which was another promising sign to Disney in regards to more business down the road."Internationally, the movie took in $86 million to end it's opening total globally to $162 million.
With a somewhat clear path of weekend's lacking big competition for THUNDERBOLTS* until the Memorial Day weekend holiday at the end of the month, look for THUNDERBOLTS* to continue to add to its box office numbers and become profitable on its reported $180 million production budget.
