SHANG-CHI Opens to $140 Million Worldwide With Record Breaking Domestic Holiday Weekend at $90 Million

(Please note these numbers all estimates, via Deadline. Official numbers are due in the coming days.)

Disney and Marvel Studios have destroyed opening weekend estimates for SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS.

The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe entry has opened domestically to the tune of nearly $90 million with an additional $56 million overseas. This brings its total global opening weekend to over $140 million. And this is without any help from Disney+ streaming as SHANG-CHI is not available on Disney+ Premier for an additional charge.

The domestic opening is also a box office record for Labor Day weekend. The previous record holder was 2007's HALLOWEEN with $30 million.

SHANG-CHI has a reported production budget of $150 million so the film has a ways to go to become profitable, but positive reviews, great word-of-mouth, and a lackluster movie release schedule for the remainder of September figures to help the movie's legs and numbers in the coming weeks.

Despite many markets still closed, or having limited theater in seating, this is a huge win for the theater industry as the Delta COVID-19 variant still runs rampant throughout the world. Whether or not this marks a turning point for the theater experience remains to be seen, but there are plenty of big movies incoming this year including: NO TIME TO DIE, GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE, Marvel's ETERNALS, as well as this year's most highly anticipated movie release of 2021, SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME.
