SUPERGIRL Season 6 Episode 5 Review: Prom Night

After solving the Phantom issue, we are back on the most important issue of the season: Saving Kara. After Brainy did some digging, he found an article from a Midvale newspaper noting that on a day in May in 2009 there was an asteroid shower. Alex explains a meteor almost hit them but Kara punched it out of the sky and also hurt herself since there was Kryptonite in it. Using his fancy science, Brainy declares there should be some of Kara’s DNA on the baseball field. So Brainy and Nia are going back to the year 2009. Which was 12 years ago. I feel old.

There’s also some differences since the Crisis. Like Kara’s boyfriend, Kenny Li, survived and together with Kara they went around doing good deeds around town. She was a superhero before she even knew it.

Brainy gets super prepared and makes sure they have costumes ready. However, a part of the spaceship breaks and they land in Midvale a day early. If that’s not bad enough, they are seen by Kara, Alex, and Kenny of the year 2009. Off to not great start there.

Kara, always being helpful, offers to help them get back on course (after they pretend to be knocked off course after fleeing their dying planet). They manage to hide the ship under the baseball field. Brainy goes with Kenny and Nia goes with Kara and Alex for the night. During the night Nia dreams of getting attacked by a tiger. This probably is a reference to a ship of two aliens on their way to Earth to try and capture Kara as a new species for their “zoo”. Like they don’t have enough to worry about.

The next day Brainy and Kenny go to the school to get the material they need while Alex, Kara, and Nia go to their mother’s job at the local College to get a geode to help power the ship. At the same time, CJ Grant, or as we know her, Cat, is in town poking around for information on how so many good deeds are happening around town. She correctly believes that it is a superbein and she intends on finding proof. She comes straight to Midvale College where Alex is posing as her mother. Alex manages to lead Cat off their trail while Kara and Nia get the Geode.

As they’re leaving, they come across a truck full of gas that seems to be driving itself. It’s piloted by the alien zookeepers to get Kara to reveal herself. They manage to do just that as Kara and Nia spring into action and stop the truck before it hits a school bus. Their almost abductors miss hitting them and Brainy flies in and is able to tell there is someone above them. The aliens get out of dodge and so does Kara and the others as Cat is on their tail.

This leads to Kara and Alex fighting about how Kara is being kind of reckless with her abilities. Alex even goes so far as to blame Kara for the sacrifices that she had to make. Kara gets upset and goes off with Kenny. Meanwhile, Brainy and Nia are able to identify the alien as Naxim Tork, who would've gotten captured by the DEO except because of their run in with him, the future changed. They’re able to locate his ship, but they walk straight into his trap. They can just not get a break here.

Brainy is one step away from a panic attack and he can only seem to deal with his stress in either stress eating or exercising. Nia is having trouble coping with not being able to discern what her dreams mean. It’s a very taxing mission for the two of them, especially not being able to do this with the help of the team. We shall see how they manage to get out of this one.
