SUPERGIRL Season 6 Episode 3 Review: Phantom Menaces

After Silas leaves a message for the super team after a Phantom comes out of his body, J’onn and M’gann find him in his freezing cold apartment after being attacked by a phantom.

Kara and her father decide to follow the Phantoms into the portals they use. Of course, they have no idea where they’re going but they hang onto the Phantom and get flung into a different part of the Phantom Zone. Kara hurts her leg and her father is kidnapped by a group of criminals. Kara is saved by a woman who scares them off by telling them Phantoms are coming.

Alex is overcome with grief knowing that there’s no way to get Kara back. Kelly encourages her to not ignore J’onn’s call and to get back in the game. She gets together with him and Brainy to identify what the phantom did to Silas. The Phantom’s main purpose is to try to turn their victims into copies of them. He succeeds with Silas and Brainy is forced to subdue him while Alex is unable to make herself fight him.

J’onn notices her lack of action and he tells her that she needs to focus on her training so that they can find the Phantom on the loose. However, when they find the Phantom on the loose, they also find M’gann having been attacked by him despite J’onn’s order not to go after him alone. They bring her back to the tower.

Despite J’onn’s guilt, Alex convinced him to find a way to save M’gann. With Kelly’s help, they manage to save her soul and keep her body from turning into a phantom. Alex, Brainy, and Lena also manage to contain almost all of the other Phantoms. However, the original one escapes. He’s a slippery sucker.

In the Phantom Zone, Kara learns from her new friend, Nxyly that those criminals that took her father intend on sacrificing him to some kind of creature. It turns out that her new ally is a 5th dimensional imp and she is able to show her in a magic crystal that her father is fine.

She’s still unsure if she can trust Nxyly but she allows her to come with her to save her father after her ally tells her that she is actually a princess and was banished to the Phantom Zone by her father (a king) after he murdered her older brother because he was paranoid. Nxyly manages to break the bind that contained her magic. She fixed Kara’s leg and together they easily save Zor-El. Together, they decide to find a way out.

Lex and Lena are going toe to toe again. She managed to lock him out of all of Luthor Corp but he gets chummy with the new district attorney and gets a court order into letting him into the company as well as focusing on making a case against Lena and her use of Non Nocere. Yep that’s coming back to bite her in the ass.

Lena doesn’t go down without a fight though. She makes sure that the Luthor foundation makes a huge donation to the children’s wing of the local hospital so he can’t use it for his illegal dealing. In return, Lex has Otis set fire to the wing and comments that Lena was to blame for the upgrades to the wiring. Lex is even more twisted than we thought.

In the end, Lena decides to leave the Luthor Corp and the DA drops the investigation against her. Lex is stunned by her actually refusing to play against him and is almost left speechless.

I loved how everyone was dealing with the emptiness of losing Kara. It showed how central she is to all of her friends and family. The most surprising of all was Brainy. He finally let out all of his anger and rage at Lex for not just being Lex but for sending Kara to the Phantom Zone. It led him and Lena to really connect about not letting that consume them.

Something else of note is that Nxyly mentioned that she is having memories of a past that wasn’t hers since the Phantom Zone was fractured (because of the Crisis event) which has also happened to Kara. This will probably be something reoccurring until or if they get out of the Phantom Zone.
