It took several months and some additional footage added but AVENGERS: ENDGAME has done it to become the highest grossing movie of all-time worldwide. James Cameron's AVATAR has been defeated even though Disney now owns the franchise after their buyout of Fox's assets earlier this year.
Sitting at just over $2.79 billion, Endgame has done the impossible as it was unfathomable for any film to beat out AVATAR ($2.78B) even just a couple years ago. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS couldn't do it while becoming only the third film ever to breach the $2 billion barrier. Even AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR could not unseat AVATAR becoming only the fourth film to ever achieve $2 billion status.
But Endgame did it and owns the top spot [unadjusted for inflation] moving forward.
Congrats to Disney, Marvel Studios, all the actors, crew. and production staff who took part in this milestone.
