Next weekend Warner Bros. and DC's next superhero movie releases when SHAZAM! opens in theaters. Reportedly made for an estimated production budget of under $100 million, SHAZAM! is looking at a projected domestic opening in the $55 million range.
DC's SHAZAM! strikes 4,100+ theaters next weekend and should power up around $55M, having already banked $3.3M in previews. Reportedly, the film cost under $100M, which is already a huge win by superhero standards these days.— Exhibitor Relations Co. (@ERCboxoffice) March 28, 2019
An opening of this size does compare favorably with recent superhero opening weekends like ANT-MAN ($57M), X-MEN: FIRST CLASS ($55M), THE WOLVERINE ($53M), and BATMAN BEGINS ($48M). All had a bigger budget than SHAZAM! and all of them got a sequel.
Considering the positive buzz surrounding SHAZAM!, as well as its current review score on RottenTomatoes sitting at an impressive 93-percent with 85 positive reviews and 6 negative ones, it seems likely to get a sequel if it can open this strong, or better.
