Wrap Party 2018: VENOM is the Year's Most Shocking Box Office Grosses Winner

With 2018 rapidly coming to a close it is time to look back at the past year. Welcome to the DailySuperHero.com wrap party!

This past year brought us a lot of super hero movies. There were nine total (including two animated features) starting with BLACK PANTHER in February and ending with AQUAMAN this month. There were three films who made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office including: AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, BLACK PANTHER, and INCREDIBLES 2. Also, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR made over $2 billion — only the the fourth movie ever to achieve it joining AVATAR, TITANIC, and STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.

However, there is one clear-cut winner of the most shocking box office gross ticket sales performance and that is Sony's VENOM movie. It was not the best movie, especially the first half of the film which was terrible until Eddie Brock and Venom hook up, but by box office ranking alone it was the fifth highest grossing worldwide movie of 2018. Yes, you read that correctly... the fifth highest in 2018. Only AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, BLACK PANTHER, JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, and INCREDIBLES 2 made more worldwide than VENOM.

Sitting at a whopping $855 million worldwide, VENOM took in more box office cash than MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT, DEADPOOL 2, and FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD to name a few.

A shocking haul for a movie that received average critic scores of 28-percent on RottenTomatoes and a score of 35 on Metacritic. Fan scores on those two platforms were 85 and 63, respectively.

With a production budget of $100 million, and an end credits scene setting up a sequel with Venom's archenemy Carnage, Sony Pictures will be in the alien symbiote business for the foreseeable future.
