VENOM Breaks October Domestic Box Office Weekend Numbers Opening With $80 Million; $205 Million Worldwide

Cue the sequel talk as Sony's VENOM movie has massively exceeded domestic weekend opening expectations which placed the film in the $55 – $65 million opening range heading into this weekend. Breaking many October domestic opening weekend records, VENOM took in an estimated $80 million!

This marks Sony's seventh highest grossing domestic opening ever. VENOM now sits behind: SPIDER-MAN 3 ($151M), SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING ($117M), SPIDER-MAN ($114M), THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 ($91M), SKYFALL ($88M), and SPIDER-MAN 2 ($88M).

Overseas, the movie has yet to open in China — nor does it have a release date set in the world's second largest movie market — but it still took in $125 million to bring its worldwide total to $205 million.

Despite having more negative slanted reviews than positive ones, audiences, overall, seemed to enjoy the relationship between actor Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote Venom more than anything else in the movie. Especially after the extremely boring first 45–50 minutes of the film that was so much of a drag it could've pulled the whole movie apart had Hardy not single-handedly saved the film once Brock and Venom teamed-up for their symbiotic pairing.

The reportedly $100 million production budget movie now faces the tough task of continuing its box office reign as a second weekend will surely make or break its chances at a sequel, which a credits scene teased at the conclusion of VENOM. Yet, exceeding expectations by about $20 million could be enough for Sony to green light VENOM 2 even before its second weekend results are in as Sony desperately searches for tentpole franchises and wants to build their own Marvel movie universe using Spider-Man characters, like Venom, but without Spidey actually being in the movies as he's being loaned out to Marvel Studios and their Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony currently is developing more Marvel movies for female duo Silver Sable and Black Cat (SILVER & BLACK), the vampire Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter.
