ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Opens Domestically With $76 Million Weekend; $161 Million Globally

Box Office Report: Due to the World Cup, the International release of ANT-MAN AND THE WASP has been delayed in many overseas markets until August. However, its domestic opening weekend was nearly $20 million better than its predecessor ANT-MAN.

Opening three summers ago with $57 million (domestically), ANT-MAN was a big risk for the studio although it got its sequel green lit just several weeks after release. The reported $162 million production budget ANT-MAN AND THE WASP went into this weekend with a projected $75 million opening and it landed that prediction with an estimated $76 million.

The $76 million opening places ANT-MAN AND THE WASP right below the openings of fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe movies DOCTOR STRANGE and THOR: THE DARK WORLD, both opened at $85 million, and above the $65 million of THOR.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP still opened in several International markets as it brought in an estimated $85 million giving it a worldwide total of $161 million — pretty much matching its production budget. When ANT-MAN opened in 2015 its global tally was $114 million. ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is a marked improvement over the original's worldwide opening despite dealing with theatrical release delays due to World Cup play.
