INCREDIBLES 2 Opens With $180 Million Destroying the Domestic Opening Record For an Animated Film

Prior to the release of INCREDIBLES 2 this weekend, the box office record holder for biggest domestic opening weekend for an animated film was held by Pixar's FINDING DORY at $135 million.

Well... INCREDIBLES 2 absolutely destroyed that record by bringing in an estimated $180 million in its domestic release. It is truly incredible, pun intended, since tracking only projected the sequel to open as high as $140 million; it far exceeded all industry expectations.

After 14-years since the release of THE INCREDIBLES, writer and director Brad Bird returned to score his biggest opening yet; and while he has been telling the media (during the sequel's press tour rounds) he has no idea if he would entertain the idea of making a threequel, the audience has spoken. Disney's Pixar will surely consider developing a third Incredibles movie as the franchise has proven to be more popular than ever right now, even in the film industry's Age of Superhero Movies we are currently in.

The $180 million opening is the third highest opening for a 2018 movie putting the INCREDIBLES 2 in amazing company following only the opening numbers of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR ($257M) and BLACK PANTHER ($202M) earlier this year. In fact, and for some box office perspective, INCREDIBLES 2 opened bigger than CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR ($179M) making the sequel the eighth biggest domestic opening of all-time.

Also, this marks the biggest opening ever for a PG-rated movie surpassing the previous record holder BEAUTY AND THE BEAST ($174M).

Without any other PG-family-friendly animated films on the horizon this summer, look for INCREDIBLES 2 to continue to see strong box office tickets sales for many more weeks even with next weekend's JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM set to open.
