AGENTS OF SHIELD Season 5 Episode 15 Review: Rise & Shine

This episode felt like another one of those “moving the pieces into place” kind of episodes. Not a lot actually happened. Instead what we got was a huge information dump and a bunch of flashbacks.

The majority of the episode was about General Hale. It started way back when she was a kid, living under Hydra tutelage. We got little nods to things like Jasper Sitwell – who landed in middle management after all – and Von Strucker. We even got a Daniel Whitehall appearance and several Captain America references. It makes sense, given how this plot now revolves around the idea of the super soldier once again.

It also explained why Ruby exists. She’s meant to become the Hydra super solider. But her mother doesn’t think she can handle it. She’s volatile, which doesn’t make for someone who can control their powers. Instead, Hale wants Daisy to take up the mantle. Naturally, the mantle happens to be “Destroyer of Worlds”. The goal of the Destroyer? To defend the world from an alien threat.

We knew this already. But what we didn’t know, and still don’t in fact, is what the alien threat is. The Confederacy seemed to think that they could defeat whatever this threat was, for a price. They not only want the Gravitonium, but the Inhumans as well. This part of the story is still a little luke warm and I’m not sure what the endgame is. Is this building towards some kind of Infinity War tie-in? There can’t possibly be two alien invasions happening at the same time, that would just be silly.

Overall, Coulson was primed and ready to play balled until he heard about the Destroyer of Worlds. Visions of the future he just came from hit him and he started raving like a crazy person. At least we understand how Daisy could be capable of destroying the world. With the power of a super soldier amplifying her Inhuman abilities, she’d be more than powerful enough to crack the planet in half.

Surprisingly, we also learned where Talbott was this whole time. Turns out after waking up from this coma, he also suffered massive brain damage. It was sad to see a man so well put together come apart at the seams because his mind was failing him. I wasn’t sure if those scenes were meant to imply that Hale was messing with his brain in order to get him moved, or if she simply jumped at an opportunity. I guess it’s safe to assume that Talbott won’t be helping Coulson any time soon.

Lastly, the final ten minutes of the episode were spent back with SHIELD proper, as the team tried to figure out where Coulson was. This bit felt super disconnected from the rest of the episode, but there also needed to be some movement on what happened with Fitz from last week. Leaving that hanging in the air would have been cruel.

The whole thing felt like a little wrap up of last week’s plot threads. Yo-yo got her new arms, Fitz found out that Deke was his grandson, and Daisy is off to find Robin because she might be the only person who can help them find Coulson. It was a jam packed ten minutes, and vastly more interesting than everything that happened before it.

I can only hope that next week’s episode isn’t so divided, and we get a better idea of where the rest of this season plans on going.
